funding for new websites

Hi everyone,

I have a new website that is just about ready to launch. I am turning my mind to advertising the launch (e.g. newspaper adverts). I'm running out of money I wondered if anyone knew if funding is available to help with this kind of thing (and with hosting costs).

When I google about funding, I see lots of funds that help out with new businesses, but this website won't *sell* anything, it's just a site for entertainment (like Facebook or YouTube for example). So I don't really see it as a new business.

Is it possible to get help with this kind of thing or am I on my own? I am in the UK.

Thanks in advance!

I seriously doubt you will find someone who will want to fund your websites without getting a cut of some of the websites profits. Most people fund their websites out of their own pocket unless they want to partner with someone. If you do want to partner with someone, you will have to agree to share the revenue that your websites will generate in the future.

No one will pay you to make your own websites.

I understand. But I've seen government schemes that help certain groups out with a little bit of funding - nothing needed in return.

I just thought there might be something similar for websites.

"nothing needed in return" is not true, generally governments help fund a new business in hope that it will succeed and in turn the business will provide jobs / pay tax. This is giving back to the economy ( the gov.)

If you have a good idea, you could look for partners to provide the cash, and you put in the work.

I understand *why* governments do it - but they are often not *asking* for anything in return. Yes if one's business succeeds, one creates jobs and gives back to the economy, but the same is true if a website blows up to be successful. Hence why I was asking if there is any equivalent funding for a website, or whether a website creator just has to apply for the same funding sources that are available to more traditional businesses.

There are sites such as gofundme.com and indiegogo.com where people can appeal to the public for donations to fund their projects. I have seen a number of websites listed there. These are crowdfunding sites and you describe your project in detail plus offer little perks to people in terms of contribution levels.

I agree with yogini, you're best bet is to try and source some funds through crowdfunding like kickstarter.com. You have to have a really good product/service though.

No chance from government mate!!! Maybe crowd funding, however if its a good idea then Someone will probs just make it ahead of you. No VC will touch it unless they get a huge part of then enterprise.

Stop wasting your time looking for free money and keep working on it. Otherwise get a second job and finance it yourself! Gov grants etc are given to help certain industries and generate tax dollars. Example manufacturing industry or agriculture industry will creat jobs, investment, food security, national pride etc. not many websites end up providing that stuff, usually it's a solo job with outsourced workers and minimal control over taxable income.

If you want to make it big, you have to take risk yourself! No body else is going to fund your risk unless you have heaps of experience or are willing to bend over for it!

    Good luck with it!

having your own website is like owning a business, you need to have an investment of your own.
