Hi there, I have some really basic blog questions and I was wondering if somebody can help me. I am planning to start a blog and I asked a question on the WF about where to submit it to and got some really good advise. The problem is I don't really understand the advise I have been given! I was told 1. Make sure I "ping my blog" - Can someone explain what that actually means. 2. Submit my blog to directories - How do i actually submit my blog? Does this mean submitting the whole blog or just updates from it? 3. Submit to RSS Feed directories - What does this actually mean? I am sure these are extremely basic questions but would really appreciate any advsie. Thanks |

1. Pinging is basically a service to update different search engines that your blog has updated. So whenever you add new content "ping" your blog. I use the 3 services below - Blog and ping | Pingoat Ping-o-Matic! Blog and Ping Tool - Use Pingler.com to Drive Traffic your Blogs and Websites 2. Submit to blog directories is just putting your blog in front of the right people. The more places you submit your blog to, the wider range of visitors you may get. Look at it as leaflet delivering. If you deliver leaflets to just one street, you will only get customers from that street and the people they tell. If you delivery your leaflets to 100 streets, you then have a wider range of people who will see your leaflets! I use this (just the free one's, cos i'm tight!!) List of Blog Directories (Weblogs) - 250 free & paid blog directory submission listings & services. 3. I got the following extract last year from an EZA by Colleen Slater - RSS Feed Syndication Every blog has an RSS feed. By submitting your RSS feeds to the most popular feed services online you can get very quick traffic to your site, particularly if you are focusing on keywords with lower competition in the search engines. All that you need to do is submit your feed url to a range of services (these are free) as soon as your site is live. The ones in particular that I highly recommend are:

I would recommend installing this plugin: WordPress › MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer WordPress Plugins Which does the pinking for you from your blog and will only ping when you first make a new post or page, instead of pinging every time you edit or update an existing post or page. If you have wp 2.7.1 you can install it directly from your wp dashboard, go to PLUGINS then ADD NEW, use the search box and type in MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer, this will bring up a a new window where you can read about it and if you want to use it, click INSTALL from that new window. Once it is installed you need to activate it, it already comes loaded with some services to ping, you can add others to it though as well and you can also tell it how often to ping those services. Thanks but I am not using normal blogging platform. The blog will actually be inbuilt into my site if that makes sense. |

Like Susanne says you can get plug-ins to automatically ping. I believe as well that if you have submitted your blog to Technorati, they have an automatic ping as well. However, i always ping myself as well. The way i look at it, us IMers, try to find ways of saving time, outsourcing stuff, etc and sometimes the solution is right in front of us and can be done in a few seconds. After every blog post, i bookmark my post with just 5 or 6 bookmarking sites...Digg, Propeller, Mixx, Reddit, StumbleUpon & Twitter...Why, well i could go and social bookmark to 150 sites, the others give backlinks, but i personally have never had any traffic from them. I always ping to the 3 services i mentioned above. This process of of bookmarking to the 6 sites and pinging the 3 services, only takes me 5 minutes extra and i view it part of the process of writing and submitting a blog post! I can guarantee, if you just wrote 1 short blog post a day and bookmarked as above and pinged as above, you will have small, but regular traffic everyday. So anything additional you do to promote your blog posts - articles, e-mails, Yahoo Answers, link building, classified ads, PPC, forum posting/signatures, etc. will bring in additional traffic. Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging - ProBlogger Any time i need tips or want to learn something new about blogging i go there. I even bought Darren's paperback book from Amazon. This is a fantastic resource and he's really helpful as well. Other than that, hopefully a Warrior who has a better knowledge of blogging platforms may be able to advise. Cheers Partha | |
