Blog as part of website or external? Help please

Hi,

I am wondering if you could help me. I am building my website at the moment and want to start a blog.

My question is, do I have to use an external blogging platform such as typepad, wordpress etc?

Or can I just make a blog that is part of my overall website?

If I include in my website can I do things such as submit it to blog directories, rss feed directories, ping it etc.

Any comments would really be appreciated.

    This depends somewhat on your overall strategy. Often I will build my website using a Blogging platform like Wordpress. But I will host it on my own Domain/Server. Even If my site has a tradditional Page by Page layout as opposed to a Post by Post layout, the Wordpress Platform allows for easy syndication (RSS) of content and Google just loves the structure.

    I would almost always also create a Blogger and Wordpress blog, hosted on their respective domains, which link to my main site to drive more traffic and increase the popularity of my main site. You must however ensure that your content remains somewhat unique across all your properties.

    you would need blogging software. If you are designing your site in html you can load up something like wordpress and then duplicate your home page etc to the blog so it all intergrates nicely.

    If you use a blogging platform on your own hosting, your in control. Using an outside platform, they are in control. Wordpress is good for deleting blogs that are selling something, or using to build linkbacks. All your work could be gone in a second.

    Though the external blogs do have their uses, such as getting indexed quicker and higher. Might take longer to get your own internal blog ranked.

    If you do it on your main domain i.e. mydomain.com/blog you're adding valuable content and and fresh pages all the time = great for SEO

      No doubt - if it is a blog that you intend to grow over time, then host it on your own domain.

      You can either host it in a directory off of your main domain or create a new domain for your blog and drive traffic back to your other domains through links.
