Finding "profitable" non-fiction niches for Kindle

Hello All...

Ok, we all know that when it comes to long term success with Kindle publishing, high quality content is key. That's a given.

My question is: how do you guys find profitable niches to write about?

Amazon does not have a tool that shows us what items are being searched for. I wish they did, but that would make things to easy, right?

So how do YOU go about finding non-fiction niches to write about that you know will have demand?

For me, I started at the Google Keyword Tool. I type in a topic that I know a bit about, and then see what people are searching for on Google. Granted, a Google searcher and a Amazon kindle buyer are not the same thing. But I am just trying to find out what topics people wanting more information on.

I know Google searchers are wanting free info (generally) and that Kindle searchers are ready to buy.

So once I get a feel for what is being looked up on Google, I go to Amazon. I start putting in the same keywords, and seeing the results that are produced.

How relevant is the first book that shows up?
How many items came up?
How high are those books in the sales rank?

It's not a cut and dry process. Since it is so new to me, still trying to develop a better way of finding profitable non-fiction niches on Kindle.

P.S. I know people don't like to share openly. Send me a PM if you want. I just want to get more knowledge. I have around 10 titles out and am building more.

As long as its a niche it doesn't have to be a very popular subject, but something that people are really passionate about. In my opinion it is easier to sell to 100 truly interested people, than to 10k that are only slightly concerned about the topic.

Are you talking from experience? You have sold books on Kindle?

Simply choosing any random niche is not effective. We only have so many hours in the day. I'm trying to see how people find what niches to write about in Kindle for non-fiction.

Look at the news. Gun control. Obamacare. Preventative mastectomy. Survival. Urban gardening. With midterm elections coming there will be dozens of issues people will be discussing. Start looking at political blogs and sites. Look on Facebook for what's trending.

Look at the top 100 nonfiction books on Amazon, the NY Times bestseller list. There are hundreds of bestseller lists out there. Look at blogs like Drudge, Gerald Celente, Alex Jones. More states are supporting legalized pot. That would make a great book for the right audience. Paranormal topics sell like crazy to the right audience. Aliens, UFOs, ghosts, ESP...

There's no shortage of topics, only time to cover them all.

Amazon Best Sellers: best Kindle eBooks

I just posted this in another thread, but this is the current top 100 (free and paid) Kindle Books.

      I'd say they're all quite profitable :-)

Just do your proper SEO keyword research, make sure you do old school seo in the book description and go from there :-)

Also, I would recommend you do a BROAD SUBJECT search in the amazon/kindle market place. If you see more than 12 books and less than 200, it could be a good niche for you to enter as it's not super competitive. It could also mean there's simply not enough interest or searches on that subject/niche - so check your subject/topic ideas with google trends, and even the google keywords tool

      Good luck

If there is a successful magazine on the topic, it's a safe bet that you can make great money with a book on that same topic.

Like everything else on the Kindle though, it's not enough to choose a topic and write a great book...you'll need to properly brand yourself and promote the book to give yourself the best chance to make big money.

The great news though, is that it's VERY possible!
