I won't hold it against you. All I'll say is, if I'm at the stage where I can only work for 40 cents per hour, I'd much rather improve my skills than work for those kinds of rates.

Take a loan, borrow money, do whatever. But working in a low paying environment doing such tasks will only hold you back.

5 articles per day at $1 each article working 7 days per week = $35 per week. That's probably a good income in some places. Certainly better than starving to death!

It may be a completely different way of life in places like India and other similar countries, and the pay structure may be vastly inferior to elsewhere, but you know what? . . if you're intelligent or talented, smart or determined, and truly willing to learn, then you'll rise above it.

The same opportunities exist online for anyone, whether they're from a country like India or a Western country. If you can come on here moaning and complaining that you only earn a dollar an article then that means you have an internet connection. If you have an internet connection that means you can take advantage of the numerous free English language tutorials online. Become proficient in English and you can either charge more competitive rates for your articles or set up your own business where you determine your own future and success.

No-one need know you're from India or some other such country. No-ones going to bash you down on price if your work is THAT good. And no-one can stunt your ambition, only you. Most importantly, no-one forces you to stay on the bottom rung of the ladder.

If you truly want it you'll go get it.

This tells you several things:

1) If you want to promote yourself as a writer, don't go to Odesk or the like, or any of the job posting boards; they will (nearly) always pay peanuts.
2) Sadly, someone will probably accept this "job" through desperation.
3) Even more sadly, the idiot who posted this probably thinks it's a reasonable offer.

There are writing gigs that pay $1 or more per word, and they are not really very hard to find.

$1 is a lot of money to some people. You can find people to do 500 words for FREE. Think about it. Of course, people use SCUMMY MEANS to get that price but yes, people will write 500 to 1000 words for FREE. There are even blackhat means to get whole PLR collections (200,000 words) for FREE.

Just because other people do it, doesn't mean YOU should.

And... no one is talking about QUALITY either.

You guys are forgetting that the average salary for a teacher in a country like the Philippines is something like $300 per month. That's $10 per day and that's for a teacher. That means if a person in the Philippines could spend 8 hours a day writing 10 good quality articles they could be earning the same as a teacher.

How stupid does it sound now? Them be making good dough!

Never forget about the countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Those countries have got good value of dollar. Even $100 per month is a good income for average people of those countries.

That's correct... it's not much money by western standards. But the cost of living is so much lower in a lot of countries which many people don't consider. I live in Indonesia from time to time. Food cost for one day equates to a around three dollars for three people while we're there (if you're happy with freshly prepared traditional food and forgo commercial junk food). No cans, bottles or jars there either thankfully... unlike here in Australia where most people live out of a jar.

Here in Oz it's more like $50 per day for food for a family. We can't even buy fresh fruit and vegetables here (think cold store for 3 to 6 months which certainly isn't fresh)! Nor do we have access to fresh tropical fruit like we do in Indonesia.

It's a global marketplace. If you're an American writer, you're so much better off spending your time marketing your wares to an audience that knows what to do with high quality writing. They don't bat an eye at paying $50 and higher for 500 words because they see it as an investment, not a cost. Those $1 buyers are clueless about what to do with that content, so in their minds the goal is to minimize the expense.

In this case u should find out the clue first before giving the job. U know in HRM there is a topic called recruitment, where interview and other tools are mentioned as tool to use bofore recruiting a person. $1 buyers like to spend some cent rather than spending time in taking interview. This is sick thinking. $1 seller has no alternative to proof him/herself to buyer. So they are bidding in lower rate. This is poor thinking. Patience should be the tool and odesk exams can be another one to represent the skill.

Oh, I have seen worse. Freelancer.com is like a comedy club now.

Unfortunately, writers keep lowering their rates so they can get at least some work from those websites. I actually had someone on here ask why I charge "so much" and if I even get any work. Well, I do. I actually raised my rates recently and I have been getting just as much work as before.

Guys, let's be a little charitable here, please. The micro-workers in developing countries have different problems from ours. For example, they wake up in the morning and find themselves stuck in places that make the innermost ring of Dante's Hell look like a Church Social. We wake up in the morning and we are in a decent country, even if we have to dig ditches for a living.

Yes, a global marketplace, and global opportunities - and that's no matter where you live or what your circumstances.

The $1 buyers are clueless, but so are the $1 sellers. It takes two to make a transaction. If you didn't lower yourself to those standards in the first place, maybe there wouldn't be so many $1 buyers.

This is really funny. But may not be to those who will actually accept the job. I personally do not think that this is a good rate even for third world countries like the Philippines and India, but the case may not be the same for newbies there.

I'm sure there are a lot of members here who also hire people from oDesk. And as much as we'd find this funny, I hope we have not and will not hire anyone to do 500 words for $1, or even test someone's skills for free. It's just... wrong.

all this talk about cost of living,etc.. and no talk about the crap quality one will be getting from a broken english speaker/writer

There are many things cheap outsourcing is good for, writing isn't one of them.

these types of services seemed to gain popularity when link wheels and pyramids were abundant in the IM world. where the quality did not matter at all, only copyscape passed content mattered; the fact some writer outsourcing services would put the content into 'spinner' format shows this. Nobody ever had to comprehend what it was saying, only if it contained keywords for google to scrape, but google is getting smarter with their algorithm changes removing sites that use these techniques from the SERPS.

Sometimes we don't think about it, as we have never run ito it. It sounds like so little.

I used to live close to the Mexico border in San Diego area. I would go to a dentist in Mexico. All day parking was a few dollars in his business area parking lot.

The exchange rate at that time was that $1. was worth about $10. in their currency.

My dentist was charging about half of what I would pay in the U.S., so was really making out well. A $400 (U.S.) crown would equate to him making about $4,000 in his currency. And he sent me to another doctor for the root canal part. The person owning the parking lot was making out real well also.

So in this case $1.00 for an article would have been worth $10.00 if they had lived in Mexico. Now to find someone that can speak good english... It is possible and then it is up to your concious what you pay, but make it fair.
