Clique Marketing - Do You Approve?

You know what I mean. You rub my back and I'll rub yours. I see it everywhere on here and I generally regard it as being a little odd and often disingenuous.

You leave me a nice review and I'll reciprocate the gesture at some future date. A cosy clique of IMers all rushing to tell those outside their narrow circle how "awesome" (this word gets used a lot) their friends' products are.

Now I don't mind if the review is genuine and honest, but it is rather simple after a while to identify the cookie-cutter type reviews - it's all a bit soulless.

It's getting to the stage where I am automatically zoning out at the more hyberbolic reviews as the language used, although incredibly positive, lacks integrity.

I think some IMers euphemistically describe this process as "networking" but I'd like to think we hold ourselves to higher standards than that. No matter what someone else has promised you or has done for you in the past, you simply should not promote their product with such exuberant language unless you truly believe it so - simple as that.

Now my vertigo is kicking in so time to get off my high horse!

Sounds unethical. Real reviews must be based on real usage and real value. Fake hype reviews in exchange for a favor. I am not sure that's keeping the best interest of the end user in mind.

Yes but unfortunately it goes on all the time.

A lot of WSO reviews are filled with

      a) IM buddys doing a favour
      b) Newly created accounts
      c) People who got free review copies

I feel sorry for newbies if they read glowing review after glowing review and then proceed to buy a product that isn't all that. If any of the groups a-c above genuinely like the product then that's perfectly acceptable and I have to say the marketers I admire most are those who send me promotional emails very rarely and promote few products. And then you get other guys who send sometimes a mail day or promote almost every new hyped product that comes out.

Surely ethics has to come into the money-making process at some point, they are not necessarily mutually exclusive concepts.

    hi Nathan251,

Right on! and Well said! I hear and feel you loud and clear. I fully agree with your opinion about this and it truly disgusts me to no end. This is why I never offer a product or service review unless I have actually used it myself. Let us hope that many of these dishonest fakers will read your post and this thread. Hopefully this would make a positive impact.
