Hostgator affiliate program = stealing is named "expired" money

so hostgator has a threshold of 100$ = 2 sales

but if you make 2 sales and some months between them you don't get paid because 1st sale "expired". This mean you will never get paid for it.

short story : unless you can make a lot of affiliate sales and afford to be robbed by hostgator for a few of them, than stay out of hostgator's affiliate system.

I don't like any of Hostgator's affiliate policies. I dumped them a long time ago for promoting. They have way too many reasons why they can get away with not paying affiliates for the traffic and sales they send. Let them promote their own stuff.

Still like them as a host, but would never promote them again.

Not to speak about Hostgator introducing VAT but without a way to recover your VAT via a VAT number. Thats like +24% on their prices.

Currently moving away from their hosting and making back my losses by 200% borderline legal exploitation of their hosting.

It's pretty clear, in their terms. They insist that people make 2 sales within 6 months, or whatever it is, just to make sure that they don't pay everyone a commission on their own hosting. It's not that unreasonable, surely, to want your paid affiliates to make two sales, to prevent "fiddling"? If you really think that's "stealing", here's a good site for you: Dictionary.com - Free Online English Dictionary

(Meanwhile, I think you can buy your own hosting there through Commission Junction, anyway? :p ).

Yeah , like 1 dude from usa and 1 dude from uk are the same person with me, not to speak about the cc's and stuff.

If someone wants to rob them it can do it on more effective ways.

Also, on that dictionary im sure there are defs for "idiot", "sarcasm" , "empty" and stuff like that.

Just a warning about Hostgator, they are extremely unfair, in all aspects:

      - stealing affiliate money
      - closing down VPS's for CPU quota usage ?!
      - stealing VAT
      - threats of disabling sites when a retard sends a mail with "dmca" in title, even its a SF bogus stuff in there
      - and a lot more but my time costs to much

short story : avoid Hostgator on any of their products

How are they stealing vat? HG say that they have to comply with the EU VAT regulations.

Don't other hosts have the same rules on DMCA complaints?

Not too many good lovers of Hostgator I dumped then too, you have to have an active affiliate for 2months before you get paid.

The only good thing is, you earn $50 per sale...

I received an affiliate commission from Hostgator in October, 2012. I then recently received another one several weeks ago in May.

Starting May 2, Hostgator changed their TOS to require that the minumum threshold of $100 be met before 180 days after your first commission. My first sale being back in October, the 180 days had already passed by the time they enacted their new TOS.

Hostgator is now flagging my commission back in October as "expired." I emailed their affiliate support and they said that I am subject to the new TOS despite it being impossible for me to have done anything to prevent my first commission from being considered expired.

Is there anything I can do to fight them on this? In my situation I truly feel like they are "stealing" from me, since I had no way of knowing this would happen.

Looking forward to your suggestions, thanks.

I have a hosting review website with a pretty amount of traffic, just removed HG from the site for the same reason (i have a nice amount of money to get from them...). Who pays more? webhostinghub, arvixe, justhost are the top ones for me. Now testing out optimalhosting but the price they offer is too high to attract customers although they offer a good payout for affiliates at the beginning. The above companies are tested and they do give you leads (got $450 in 3 days with webhostinghub). Cheers.

Can't you bypass some/most/all of these problems by promoting Hostgator through Commission Junction, instead?

Hostgator Services are slightly down after it has been acquired by EIG Groups which are always famous for their bad support and services.

I agree 100%. I've had a few technical issues last few months meaning I've had to contact HG support around half a dozen times. Each and every time time - absolutely the *worst* support experiences I've ever known.

Most problems were related to poor site performance. I had many unnecessary hours on the phone with their operators not having a clue and admitting finally they'd failed their 99% uptime guarantee to me.

That's a shame, they were so good before being taken over. I've been with HG for years now but not for much longer.

I have heard many horror stories of the Hostgator affiliate programs. I personally use their hosting services as it is still quite good but I will promote other hosting affiliate program. There are many other hosting company around and I am sure some will offer much better services.

what I find funny, is people complain about their shady practices when it comes to affiliates but then they turn around and promote the same company through commission junction. Shows you they're only worried about making the couple bucks.

It doesn't matter if using CJ or HG's own system. I guess people will eventually realize this too. I've been saying the HG affiliate program is scammy since 2011. Even when Brent ran the company, the affiliate system was shady as hell. NO OTHER COMPANY does commission this way, and I often wonder if it's actually legal. (Their lawyer be damned, I'd like to hear a judge on this one.)

With EIG in charge, it's now a shady host, too.

        Two reasons to avoid them.

Here's a bold move -- consider recommending only hosts you've used, tested for 1+ years, and know to be excellent. What a concept! Of course, that means suggesting hosts that only pay $15-30, sometimes more, sometimes less, not just $100 EIG brands at CJ.
