Whats been the major changes in the Search space in the last year?

I was asked this question recently:

"Whats been the major changes in the Search space in the last year?"

I answered I thought both a shift towards mobile and the Google panda/penguin updates which pushed towards larger, fresher, "branded" websites.

What do you think have been the major changes in the search space in the last year?

Google updates its algo every few weeks, then they release mega updates every few months that they publicize.

Having a vast SEO background, and up until now mostly relying on organic search traffic - I can tell you ranking a site is more difficult than it has ever been.

Google's DO NO EVIL mandate is failing, and they are doing plenty evil making it harder than ever to SEO any page; webmasters are turning to PPC advertising and that is what google wants IMO. More dollars to report every quarter.

Well, junky backlinks no longer have pull and neither does poorly written content. Keyword stuffed crap isn't going to work either.

The focus is more on relevant quality that the readers clamor for. "Search places" are a business after all, and it only makes sense that they really want what their users want.

I think they're cleaning house quite nicely, actually.

Don't get me wrong, they've a ways to go before they completely unclutter the house, but they're working on it.

The shift is clearly towards quality and against spammy content, spammy links, spammy everything. But don't think that is actually a bad thing. What recent Google updates have done is to completely level the playground for some keywords, kicking into oblivion websites that have used shady techniques to rank.
Now is a great time to build an awesome website, as long as you have patience, great ideas and a desire to put your best out there. Quality should come before quantity. Offer value first and the money will come naturally.

    Thanks for the replies.

What about changes in terms of PPC?

I agree with the quality in both articles and links - seems the importance of having a super clean white-hat website are now more important than ever.
