Help, I just killed my Wordpress Blog

Hi Folks

Well, it had to happen at some point. I had a blog installed at the root of my domain...an index.php - However, I now wanted a normal sales page as my index(html) and move my blog to a sub folder. So, trying to copy the structure of another site I have where this is already the case, I created a sub folder (called blog) with my ftp thingie, dragged the relevant files into that folder so in theory, if I go to mysite dot com/blog/index.php - shouldn't there be something there?? Instead, I get this lovely blank white page. It's certainly not cluttered.....
..............
...........
...
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks
Phil

Phil I think if you move the Blog back where it was choose Export Posts it will do so then start a new blog and import them. Or you could start a new Blog but point at your Database for the old Blog and the settings should follow

    Hey Willye

Hey, actually, while you were typing, I moved the stuff back and it works again. It's a bit weird because I now have an index.html and an index.php. Luckily it goes to the html by default which is what I want, so then for my blog I guess in the mean tiime I could have a link to the blog pointing to the index.php file. In the long run though I will do as you suggest about the export or change settings.

    thanks for your help!

As far as I understand (not very far =p) to move a wp blog you need to have your new blog point at the data base for the old blog. When you move the files to a new folder, all you did was move them to a new location but they now don't point at any data base (or point at a new one) so you lose all your content.

If you can move the files, and point the blog at the old data base it should work.

Quick question was this a wordpress blog if so what I did when shitching things around is this. First I made sure I ftp the entire blog contents to my harddrive. Then I rebuilt the site as needed and placed the blog contents in the blog folder. If that does not work you are still ok with all of your post. Just go to WordPress › Blog Tool and Publishing Platform redownload the file. FTP the files in as told to do from wordpress. Then just take the content folder of your back up files stored and submit inplace of the new ones presto your articles are all back. You will have to reset up how you would like it to look again. Atleast you wont lose days and housr of hard work. You also need to make sure you reconfig your sitemaps to get those pages relisted with the correct urlbase

Actually this is misinformation, the blog will still point at the same database no mater where you move it. Remember, it's the blog you're moving, not the database.

The real issue is that the database contains settings that include the absolute path to the original WordPress installation. The only practical way to modify them is to use the configuration settings in the WordPress admin before you move the blog.

Again I refer you to the instructions provided by the people who developed WordPress:

        Moving WordPress WordPress Codex

    Hi Phil

As you found out the hard way there is more to moving WordPress than just simply copying files. Some of the configuration files and database entries contain absolute paths in them, and they need to be changed to reflect the blogs new location.

The easiest way to do this is to modify your WordPress configuration before you move the files, specifically the WordPress Address and Blog Address settings (in the General options). You may also need to change your permalink structure if you altered it in your original installation, and you may have to alter some paths to images.

WordPress has the instructions at Moving WordPress WordPress Codex.

    Aloha

    Move files back to root.
Change the settings in WP Admin. Make the new domain http://www.yourdomain.com/blog or whatever your directory is.
    Save.
    THEN move the files.

you cant just move it because there's a database attatched to it. when you move everything you thrash all the file addresses per the database.

you know that you can have a static page from your blog as your index page for wordpress right?

I would back up my database and themes and just use this a chance to install the latest wordpress edition as a new blog. Then add the db and old theme back in.

Take a deep breath, hasten slowly

First of all, go into your web hosting account. Assuming it's cpanel, find the backup section - and download a backup of the database.

Then you're in a much better position than you were before

Follow Blue Square's advice about moving the blog.

If you change the information within wp-admin, then the files, plugins, themes, etc should be set up correctly to talk to the database.

you should do it now and save yourself a lot of hassle.
just install a fresh wordpress blog in the /blog/ directory, and direct it to your existing database. when you've checked it works, delete the old one.

Under your wordpress admin panel, go down to settings, then select general.

change these to where you want your new wordpress to be located at.

    WordPress address (URL)
    Blog address (URL)

Then move your folders there. It works because i just did it on one of my blogs and made sure it works before i posted here.

If you want your homepage in a different folder... change :

    Blog address (URL)
"Enter the address here if you want your blog homepage to be different from the directory you installed WordPress."

Phil - the correct answer above was mentioned. USE A STATIC FRONT PAGE>> this is a built-in feature in Wordpress. I use it for all my sites. Well known to WP users.

Just do this, it's MUCH easier than re-doing anything.
