An Individually Written Sales Page For EVERY visitor

Not sure if it has been done (or if it could be done) but I will explain my idea about how to give every visitor to your website, a sales page written SPECIFICALLY for that visitor.

Suppose we are selling an MMO product.
When someone lands on the page, it says something like :

----------------------------------------------------------
Before we tell you more about XXXXX, we would like your help to find out what it is that people really need help with and what they find important in products about making money online. Please type numbers 1 to 5 against the items listed with '1' against the item you think is most important and number '5' against the item you think is least important.

Low priced product
Copywriting training
Traffic generation methods
Increase conversions
List building
----------------------------------------------------------

Once the visitor has simply enterd the numbers 1 to 5 and then clicked to continue, the software would 'arrange' the blocks of copy so that the most important aspect as selected by the prospect would be placed at the top of the individually generated sales page.

Each of the other sections would then follow on in order of preference as selected by the visitor.

The software would also know that depending on where 'low priced product' was placed in order of importance, a different price would be selected and inserted into the sales page. A low price for price concious shoppers, with the price increasing as the visitor shows that price is unimportant.

Forgot to say in post above that with 5 aspects of products as noted, there are actually 120 different combinations which they can be arranged in.

It's an interesting concept, but the first thing that comes to my mind is "what? I just got to your site and you're gonna make me work? Bye!".

Maybe a little more intro massage, to lure me into participating, might make it interesting enough to do all the brainwork and clicking.

You have 8 seconds and that might be a little liberal to capture the attention of your potential customer, do you really think they are going to be typing in numbers into site that is going to generate a sales page for them?

Yup there's already software on the market that does this.

And I've seen it hacked together with simple html forms and javascript as well.

Cool idea, though in most cases it would be easier to just send different traffic to different pages.

    Hi Jules:

Hope all is well. Interesting thoughts. There are a few marketers that I have seen use software to try to make each consumer believe they grew up in the same town.

The latest (no way will I plug this) came by way of Yahoo mail yesterday. If anyone has it you may have noticed the past year or so on the very left side of the in-box there are clickable ads that have maybe 1 line of text. When you are taken to the sales page it changes the city the creator of the service grew up in to match that of the consumer.

If only there product, sales copy and ethical nature of it matched their constant marketing techniques. The last sales page on 1 line stated "After a few months you can do this on autopilot." Another line said "All you need is to devote 15 to 30 minutes daily and it doesn't matter if you are a beginner or a pro."

Further down the page "My wife and I are in Europe and I am making money while we see the sights for two weeks."

Somehow the product wasn't for me.

We did something like that in direct sales. We got the customer to fill out a survey, which told us what their "hot spots" were. Then we'd gear our presentation towards whatever hot spots they'd highlighted.

I like your idea in theory, but as others have pointed out, it's whether they will spend the time filling out a mini online survey before getting to what they want.

I would suggest testing this out, i.e. adding your survey, but without the tailor made sections at first, to see what impact the survey has on the number of people who get past it versus the number of people who "bounce", i.e. not hang around.

Eben Pagan gave away a software tool last year called Psychic Salesletters or something similar that was based on this technique -- which is very powerful when done well.

Using the software was too much aggravation for me though and I never really did much with it.. but the demo sales letter was exceptionally cool.

I immediately saw the potential for segmenting and crafting specific copy for male vs female, old vs young, video vs text vs audio, etc.

Using the software was too much aggravation --Guess that is why he gave it away.

        Yes, that was exactly it.

Here's this really cool thing, here's the cool thing it does....

...But it's a pain in the ass so here, have it for free and have
at it, no support and no real development.

Just a tool to use to make those kind of dynamic pages.

Truthfully, if it was a Mac app, I might have put in the effort
but it was a Windoze only app and my XP box is the red
        headed step child around here...

I can't possibly have been the only one who got that thing.

The end result was really cool but it was a lot of work to make
it happen. Hence, I never used it.

        The end.

    Hi Julian,

Yes, personalization has been known for a long time in all aspects of marketing (both online and offline) and has also been successfully implemented in online copywriting.

The basic problem with "mass marketing" is that it's impersonal. In a perfect world you'd want to communicate with each prospect personally - but that's just too inefficient.

So the more you can find out about your prospect and then use it to communicate with him/her, all without spending ANY of your time (eg. make it automated) - the better your responses will be.

The thing is that this is pretty tricky - ask too much too early and you've lost them. I'd say get their contact info, then gradually collect data - what emails they open, what products they buy, what sales copy they "click" to, send some surveys from time to time and track all that data - in the end you'll get something like the results of your test, only without really directly asking for it (meaning it will feel just so much more special - imagine arriving at a page that has your name, and a page that first asks for your name then inserts it... the effect is just so much different) ... and of course all that comes at a price - a longer period of time to collect the data. But I'd say if you're after a serious present in a market - you owe it to yourself to collect data and then "understand" it and use it.

Hope that gives some directions to you my friend!

I definitely saw something like this a little while ago. But it may be way too much work for a prospect to bother.
    Thanks
