What type of hosting to use?

What type of hosting accounts do you recommend? I have a few sites now but that number will be growing in the near future. Is there any advantage to having a reseller account if I am not in the offline business?

I am not ready to go with a VPS yet. Maybe once I start getting some big traffic. Should I just stick with a standard unlimited shared hosting plan for now?

Who are you with right now?

I'd recommend HostGator, their hosting is affordable and they offer plans for more or less anyone. You could also try DreamHost, they're good too.

What TYPE of hosting plan? Shared, reseller, VPS, dedicated servers, etc...

What types of sites are these you're talking about? What do they do, how heavy is the usage etc?

        What's your budget?

Most likely, start off with shared hosting. Generally the process for upgrading is:

Shared/Reseller > Virtual Server > Dedicated server. It all depends though on the types of sites. In a lot of cases price vs performance a Virtual Server can be more powerful than a dedicated server.

I'd also advise against looking at so called "unlimited" everything plans.

  • Unlimited shared hosting would be the first suggestion and seems to be a popular choice for people that need a little more than the cheapest plan, but don't anticipate requiring a dedicated server (yet). However, without knowing what types of websites / scripts you intend to run, it's difficult to give a boiler plate answer. You could set up your sites, and wait for your host to contact you to tell you that your unlimited plan wasn't really unlimited after all. They will then hopefully "recommend " that you move to a dedicated server. You might want to contact them first to make sure that this is how they operate, as some host are known to simply "suspend" your account if your sites end up eating up too many resources.

I'm a massive fan of reseller hosting and have been for a long long time. If you're running multiple sites I highly recommend it. HG's reseller is great. The smallest package (aluminium) is more than enough for a long time and the cost is low.

    Hope that helps!

Unlimited hosting isn't bad if you just have some small sites, but there are larger shared host that give you a specific amount of bandwidth and disk space. Unlimited hosting usually gives you about 5-10GB of bandwidth, which isn't too bad for small sites.

If you want to upgrade to a better shared plan with more disk space and bandwidth, then check out A Small Orange (currently my favorite host). They have a 100GB bandwidth plan for just $10 a month.

I use an unlimited shared hosting plan from Netfirms.com and I had no problems so far. I use quite some domains with the same hosting plan and don't see the need to upgrade to a reseller account or VPS. Save your money for a later upgrade.
