YouTube Ads For Traffic

Has anybody had experience with buying YouTube ads (either the banner ads or the ones that play before videos) for website traffic? I'm sure they are pretty strict on what they advertise, but I'd like to know if anybody has tried it.

    They are Google content ads.

I have a small campaign for one of my authority sites. I outsourced a decent video and thankfully my affiliate page was approved (they are massively strict about affiliate sites - a lot don't get approved).

Right now I have my bids set for 1 penny and I've gotten about 200 views. Since this is adwords for video a single view of my ad without the viewer pressing "skip ad" connotates one watched ad. Out of the first 100 views I got one click, so I paid a dollar for that one click as I'm only doing penny bids.

My video ad thumbnail has been seen about 600+ times, but no clicks on that yet. So far from my experience you definitely need to target those keywords very carefully to ensure your video ad viewers are interested in your product.

In my small test I had a relatively broad niche so not a lot of the traffic will be targeted, but doing this campaign really helps me get a feel for the video setup for adwords.

Great information, thanks. Was about to look into that for some of my Amazon sites, but not so sure if YouTube ads would be ideal for such a business.

Are you the seller of the amazon product or simply an affiliate with a review page? I now see video adwords as a relatively good avenue for product owners who want to test out conversion rates on new products.

The review process definitely weeds out anything remotely spammy in terms of the visitor experience. I foresee this as a future WSO, honestly. Because it will attract a lot of affiliate who want a piece of the action, but not very many affiliate product landing pages will make the cut.

There is currently a small loophole in the review process for your ad landing page (the site you can use to promote) but who knows when that will be mended. Your site has to pass initial review anyway.
