Hosting - Time to Move on from Shared?

I currently use Hostgators shared server Business package and its beginning to show signs that I need to move on.

I no longer have access to Hostgators stats due to the number of domains and the backups now fail as I have over 100K files.

My domains are registered in the UK with D9, so this is simply a hosting issue.

I am confused about my options and is the extra expense of a VPS actually required at the moment, using a dedicated server is out of the question as I am not making regular money online.

The number of permutations available when choosing a VPS mean I have put this off for far too long.

Here's the stats as of today.

Disk Usage 9718.66MB
Monthly Transfer 714.31MB
Inodes 125474 / 250,000 (not sure what that means but Hostgator focus on it)

Add on domains 20 (blogs, optins, affiliate sites, memberships)
Sub domains 26 (every domain is also a sub-domain, optins and management sites)

I appreciate that doing some housekeeping would be a temporary solution but I am going to have to move on at some point and thus it would be great to have your guidance on this matter

A cheaper solution would be to just signup for another one of their shared hosting plans and have them move half your websites to it and then keep half on the current server. Plus, then when there are server issues, only half the sites would be down at the same time.

Thanks, sounds like a possible solution. A logical split could be content/lead generation and affiliate sites

I did this at one point and it works well for a little while. Just understand it's only temporary solution and you will still need to move up to a VPS or dedicated package at some point.

Yeah, I would also suggest to you to simply change your host.
Hostwinds has a great and cheap plan with unlimited bandwidth, space and Add-On domains!
This way you safe a lot of money instead of buying a dedicated VPS.

Thanks, I took a look and interestingly they make the same promise as Hostgator unrestricted access to awstats which for Hostgator at least I now know is not strictly true. Will have to do some research to find out more about them and their customers ratings

I would recommend looking into a reseller account and getting some of those addon domains into separate cPanel accounts.

Inodes are what unlimited providers use to limit you...imagine that, it's not unlimited after all.

Also find a company that doesn't restrict your backups.

I would definitely get an additional shared account. Either with Hostgator or Bluehost.

Easiest would probably be to stay with Hostgator, some things might break is you switch hosts.

Switching to a VPS should be based on high traffic or back-end loads on the server.

Almost all shared is sold as unlimited, everybody who has been around the block knows that is not exactly true and deals with the knowledge.

Thanks to all, for the great advice.

I never really got the why you would choose reseller limited accounts over an unlimited account but then that is why I asked this question.

The increased security through segmentation is a great reason for choosing that option.

I now have a few options to move forward with and as Robin advises I do not require VPS or dedicated servers.

hey igorGriffiths, yep, I tend to agree with the idea of getting another account on a different server as Chase Watts mentioned. But, you really need to make sure it is DEFINITELY on a different server. From looking at your stats it does not seem you are ready for the dedicated level yet. And, you need to do that clean up! and, make it a habit. Good luck!

You don't need a VPS just by a second hosting account with another company to split up your 20 websites, diversify
