Unblockable Pop? That's just too funny for words!

I was looking for some information and a site came up that looked as though it might be interesting.

I had just started reading when the web page greyed out and I got a small message telling me that this was an Unblockable Pop Powered by MaxBlogPress.

I'm not sure what the Pop up was supposed to do but it was blocked by IE8 and it stopped me getting any information from the web site.

I hope the site owner didn't pay for it!

afellow warrior has one on his salespage and its just so tacky, you don't even get to read the headline and then pops up a big ugly unblockable popup. I think it's stupid.

I agree it's pretty annoying you do even get to read the info when they jump and block everything...

i think the message WAS the pop up

unblockable pop-ups are just simulated via css and some javascript, and are immune to
any pop-up blocker. But they do require javascript, and I understand some people with firefox have it turned off (why anyone would ever turn off javascript is beyond me).

First of all pop-ups are very annoying to the visitors. I don't undestand why still people use it after knowing the fact that many use pop-up blockers.

Recently I went to a free icons web site. Somehow my IE couldn't block theose pop-ups. And they were popping like popcorn. I had to close the browser. When Ised to have Norton, it was blocking good. But changed to Avast, I am using browser functionality.

Believe it or not - they are still used because they are still effective.

But they are MORE effective when used properly, and work better outside the IM niche.

I have a site in a niche where my optin rate is crazy high from the popup I use.

Course, it could be what I give away...but it converts better than the optin form on the page does.

Are you protecting your on line business? If you have a website, blog, ecommerce store you NEED to back it up regularly. Your webhost will only protect you so much. Check out Quirkel. Protect yourself.

          Echoes my sentiments exactly.

Just about any tool we, as marketers, use can be used effectively, or in a way that makes people never want to do business with you again whatsoever.

Can they be effective? That's the same reason why there are still infomercials, telemarketers, and spam.

          All the best,

Viruses and malware. Javascript can be used to get nasty stuff on your computer without user intervention, sometimes without user knowledge at all.

I frequently turn off Javascript when visiting suspicious or unknown sites.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

This kind of 'selling weapon' is really annoying. When I can see only the pop up -- instead of the interesting content -- I'm clicking away for ever.

Does the owner of the webpage not think that with this stupid popup he loses many visiting and maybe customer, too?

I think the point has been missed here.

The unblockable pop up was blocked and - in being blocked - obscured the web site!

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.

      Yeah Art,

I understand what you say. (Btw I tried to connect to radhikas' post)

You were lucky this time, but -- as I experienced -- the producers of popups are inventive, too.

      Take care,

      Sandor

IE8 is probably a lot newer than the software - which would probably need to be updated now. I just had IE8 installed on my computer so I am interested to see how effective it is.

Hi which pop ups do you use ?

if it was the typical unblockable pop up, I don't think it was blocked but rather that it malfunctioned.. since they are not really popups, there are no windows events for a popup blocker to actually block.

If a broswer blocked a css 'pop-up', it would also block drop down menus, etc, since it uses the same type of code (which is simply toggling the 'display' attribute of a css layer).

regarding why people use them: because they can still work like gang-busters.
