What subject line do you use in your welcome email?

Hey what subject lines do you use in the welcome email when a subscriber opts in?

I'm using "Open Up! (email 1 of 8)" and its given me pretty good results, but I'm curious what you guys are using and the type of opens u receive?

I'm thinking of changing to something more benefit driven and with a little curiousity in it like: How to make your first dollar online

What do you think?

I really want to maximize the amount of people who read my initial email! :-)

PS: I use single optin.

Just keep it simple. The welcome email should be just that..."thanks for susbcribing", etc.

I think "Open Up! (email 1 of 8)" is waaaaaaay better than "How to make your first dollar online".

For a start, it's not boring. (And once that's the start, the rest perhaps doesn't matter too much?).

I think "How to make your first dollar online" is terrible, to be honest. Every recipient will have seen that as an email title-line and seen it on 100 websites before. If you're in a niche that tens of thousands of other people are in, and your subscribers have mostly been on/are still on a large number of lists before (which seems to be the case, from your example?), I think you'll be far better off using something a bit original.

My only concerns about it are ...

    (i) I suspect it's possible that the exclamation-point in the title-line may divert it to some people's "junk email" folders rather than to their inboxes (would be interested to hear other people's opinions about that), and ...

(ii) I'd be sending a lot more than 8 emails.

      Open Up!

I agree that Open Up! is better than " how to earn money online etc etc. Everyone uses something like that. The more out of the norm you are, the better your response will be. These days, everyone is looking for something different while getting much of the same.

It might not hurt to use several variations of the Open Up! subject and test the responses as well as using other unusual subject lines. I have seen "My Business Died" and "I Am Unsubscribing You" and a host of other stuff like that. I don't know how well these work, but they are some catchy.

Lexy has some good input too. I would listen to her suggestions as they make good sense to me. Thanks for listening.

I think that "Thank you for subscribing" is better then most headlines.

    You should try it out.

I've found that the title of the report or freebie is much
more important than the subject line of the first welcome
      e-mail.

The idea is to create a freebie that is so highly desirable
that the welcome subject line is almost irrelevant.

Subject lines become important in subsequent e-mails
in the follow-up series but for the welcome e-mail the
new subscriber should already have high momentum
to do whatever they need to get to your initial content.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

Initial or any e-mail... all are important. When you create your subject line.. give away a bit of what you're going to be showing in the e-mail.

Adding humour is always good too... and build a sense of curiosity, if you can give them a 'preview' of what's about to come and make them really wonder what's going to be in the e-mail, then you got it covered

Sorry but I am going to have to say I think 'Thanks for subscribing' is one of the worst email subject lines I would ever use. It gives the user absolutely no reason to open that email at all. In that subject line you have basically told them exactly what the email is about and so they have no strong desire to open it.

Think about what spammers do to get their emails opened each day of the week. They use subject lines that you simply cannot ignore. If you were expecting a Fedex parcel and received an email saying 'Your Fedex Delivery' you would find it near impossible not to open that email. If you had a Paypal account and received an email with the subject line 'Paypal account blocked' you would find it hard not to open that email either. I know because I've received emails just like that.

You need an email subject line that they simply cannot ignore. Your first email is one of your most important emails since people have just subscribed to your list or purchased from you and so they are now most interested in what it is you have to offer.

When people have purchased from me one of the first emails they will get has a subject line such as "Product Name: Your access details...". If you have just purchased something then you would find it hard to ignore an email like that, right? A few days later I might send them an email with a subject line such as 'Product Name: Update'. Again, someone who has purchased that product will find it hard to ignore an email like that.

So just keep in mind the reason people have subscribed to your list and think of things they are expecting from you and use that to your advantage. Create a subject line they simply cannot ignore. 'Thanks for subscribing' is definitely not one of those.

these days people do not like reading long emails, unless you are awesome with copy.

However 90% of people I see are not good with copy so just keep it short and sweet.

Make sure you use their name like "Hi John, Thanks for subscribing to....."

I have found the more personalized you make your copy, offers, the better your conversions straight away or later on.
