Who got a nasty surprise with their free godaddy hosting today?? (conash3DO)

hack: gone;

seems like the game is up and Bob Parsons has cottoned on to that little hack of removing ads from the freehosting provided to domains registered at GoDaddy. I got a frantic call from a friend today who was caught out, and I've attempted to disable the injected banners for her by hiding, resizing and positioning the new ID's but that's just not working anymore.

I'd love to know what percentage of GoDaddy paid hosting increased today, as I'm sure droves of people have upgraded their accounts to remove the ads.

The morale to the story: don't risk your website with free hosting!

    Have I mis-read this?

    Sounds to me like the moral of the story is don't try hacking the ads out of a free hosting account.

    Of course, I wouldn't put my website on a free hosting account either.

      I think there's a time and a place for free hosting. After a week of internet marketing is about the time to get rid of it, but, hey it's good practice for newbies. You can stub your toes a few times and it won't cost you anything but time and self-esteem. :-) And nobody will ever see the sites you create, so you won't lose future credibility either.

        Bushwood nailed it with this response.

        As a practice pad, free hosting has it's place. It has no place as a serious business platform (imo).

    Seems like ... free equals to trouble.
    Godaddy give ad-supported free hosting that came with each domain, but i never use it.

    Like Barbara, I'm wondering if I'm reading this right.

    If so, then we could also say things like:

    I think most of us started off on freehosting. I know I did. With Geocities. But I can't recommend even free blogging sites anymore. There are just too many restrictions on what you can do, how you do it, how much you can do it, etc... It's just silly.

    Geocities for example just wasted on the vine. And Yahoo! doesn't have a good name for hosting otherwise, really. But at least you wouldn't be restricted by Geocities type restrictions (no ftp, no db, 15mb space, limited daily traffic, ...).

    So, go kick the tires, drive it around the block, then leave it at the kerb before you walk into a real car showroom.
