Anyone Actually Make Money off of Twitter?

Im wondering if anyone here has actually made any money off of twitter? Every time I log on all I get are ads and quotes from everyone. Thats fine, however when you throw a question out there for someone to comment on it as if no one is actually there. Its like 90% of twitter is automated now.

So back to the original question......

Have you or do you currently generate $ from Twitter?

Yes, but ad spamming converts very poorly (low clickthrough), and even mixing real updates and ads has limited effectiveness.

There are other ways, however. =D

There is a ton of people making money on Twitter. I user the 80/20 rula with twitter. My tweets consist of 80% content, 20% business. If you are constantly tweeting links to your business or capture page, people will not click on your tweets.

Thanks for the replies... You state that you send 80% general tweets and 20% ads/business tweets. How many followers do you have and is your 80/20 effective?

I use twitter to get targeted traffic to my blog, which helps build my list. This translates to some $.

I've made some decent money from Twitter but I don't send more than 1 in 20 messages for that purpose, most of my tweeting is for pleasure.

I can honestly say that in
all my 15 hours of using
    Twitter I've not made a
    penny.

    But then again I haven't
    tried to either.

I'm just starting to tweet, and I can see some increase in traffic, especially when someone retweets your post.

They say don't promote. Well, you can promote, but do it mildly and under the radar if possible. Give something of value first.

I read an email by Nicolas Cole which points me to this helpful article about Twitter:

myself, i mainly use twitter to let people know when my blogs are updated ... i think that's when it's most effective ... for each blog i have a twitter account tied to it, giving people easy access to know when i've updated

In reading some of the responses to the original question, I'm getting the sense that perhaps you can "brand" yourself a little on Twitter by letting folks know who you are and toss in some under the radar business tweats, if you will, every once in a while? Or am I reading too much into it?

    • I get business/traffic via Twitter indirectly---drives traffic to the blogs, etc.---but like anything else, I can see a drop-off in traffic when I don't work it consistently.

I just get traffic to my articles and blogs. I haven't tried yet but I'm still wavering on signing up with aweber. I know, I have to have a list but I only got 1 report to give away but what do I do after that?

I started Twittering in Febuary and at first I was very much of the "What is the point in all this?" which I think is the mindset of a lot of marketers at first.

However, after a great deal of observation and research I have found that I can completly automate everything. I spend about 30-40 minutes a day posting but 99% of my twitter presence is automated. I use a wide range of tools to do this and most of my content is actually valuable tips, advice and more. I have used this to build a large following (4150+ at present) with an estimated doubling in the next 30 days.

TwitterCounter Stats for @SeanDonahoe (it says 4072 for yesterday)

Look at this spike when I started applying some of my automated stuff:

    http://twittercounter.com/SeanDonahoe/all

That huge spike is going to be sustained for as long as I automate most of my twitter presence and that is because of the value I create (even if it is automated). Something to think about.

In terms of actual money, I drive traffic to some of my own products (80/20 rule actually is fairly accurate here too) and have made quite a few sales because I have built up a reputation and have the trust of my following.

One important area is to actually interact with people, join in discussions and get involved. It doesn't take much.

Another area that helps a lot is the whole "Follow Friday" thing. I get a lot of recommendations from other people who RT my stuff and then recommend other people follow me. I drive traffic to blogs, articles and resources other people may find interesting and that are not even created by me and they see this as a trust booster too.

If used right you can really make a significant amount of money from Twitter. I have several accounts and each on of them targets a different market and group of individuals and again, most are on autopilot.

Just have to think outside of the box

    All the best,

    Sean

Any chance you'd be willing to share what some of these tools are?

      Thanks, either way,

Well, I will be releasing a WSO in the near future on this so keep an eye out but I will need some beta testers for the strategy I use for review purposes so stay tuned.

  • I personally delete anyone who obviously automates their stuff. Twitter's great, but it would be ruined by spam just like everything else.

I agree, just today I saw someone send out 17 messages with exactly the same ad... bloody ridiculous. The one thing with mine is that it does not appear in anyway to be automated and I start a lot of conversations that I carry on over a period of time.

Take a look at my profile and you will see what I mean. Social media should be that, social and the best approach is to deliver real value to the people who are following you.

I am sure some people have made money from Twitter. And some gurus who have a following will make money when they recommend something.

(I haven't... am not using it)

    But...

Point is to use Twitter to BRAND yourself, rather than just sell stuff. So that you are basically more often on people's minds. It's not exactly a selling platform in the direct sense... IMO.

I'm still trying to make sense of Twitter. Everytime I start working on a new Niche, I set up a twitter account for it but never do anything with it because either I don't have the time or don't know how to go about it. But what's bizarre is that I have tons of people following me in my different niches where I haven't said squat in weeks or even months.

I have 7 twitter accounts and either need to use 'em or close 'em. I do have them set up on splitweet.com. that is awesome! if you have more than one account and it's FREE.

Though I haven't actually measured how much I've made, what I do is use a module on my Drupal site that tweets all of my new articles. I then have a "follow me" link on the front page of my site so that visitors can be notified when I've made a new post, so I guess I've made a bit of money this way.

I would say redirecting and updating my twitter followers is all I need to earn from Twitter because they will be redirected to our most recent posts and the ads will earn by them selves.

I've definitely made money from Twitter. I've even had people send me DM after and tell me how much they've liked the product.

However, I'm not in the IM niche so perhaps that matters. The IM niche seems very saturated on Twitter.

Also, I don't ever tweet with links direct to my sales page -- any promotional tweets go to my blog.

Twitter is about relationships, not direct marketing.
