Alexa ranking - anyone still care?

Alexa ranking is useless in my opinion, but some people still value it high when buying advertising or links. Do you still care about it?

No. Alexa obviously isn't 100% accurate, at best, it's perhaps 50%. However, it does give a slight indication of what's going on. Not that it's true and that is the exact result - after all, it's ONLY an estimate.

It's the same as any other traffic research tool and service out there. Let's see, compete.com and quantcast.com. They're all guesses based on little data. I don't think any research/tracking tool/service out there will ever be 100% accurate. Google Analytics is at best 85% in tracking visitors, but it is still a vital source of information based on what it DOES gather.

Anyway, I don't use it as a selling point, but I do use it as a form of reference just to see where a site may stand. Traffic RANK shouldn't be anyone's concern though. Their concern should be whether they're getting any and if those traffic are converting or not. Track the results and improve them by testing different variables and elements. So screw the ranks.

IF you have a site you can put quantcast cookie code on your pages - then it seems to become very accurate. Alexa is the least accurate and I don't take it seriously. It has gotten worse over the years too.

Personally I don't care about alexa ranking. When I'm interested in buying a website I prefer to look at the traffic stats, PR and SE ranking rather than the alexa ranking

I agree, Alexa is completely out. It just doesn't tie up whatsover. It does though, bizzarely enough, make me feel good when I see one of my sites with a low Alexa number but at the end of the day, it means nothing to me really. An bag of air.... pointless.

It's had its time in the sun.

Certainly been taken over by some better and more accurate services.

  • Alexa is so far off the mark that it's laughable.

Alexa is particularly inaccurate for newer sites.

Also when you get to the real players and the lowest numbers they do become more accurate.

Anything over 100,000 doesn't mean much anyway.

I agree the other stats like traffic, PR, indexed pages, inbound links etc. are much more important.

      Cheers,
      Zac

Google Analytics is about as close to accuracy as your going to get outside of actual server logs itself (such as Awstats which uses logs to provide data).

Alexa is just useless. I have a lower ranking than I did two years ago, but my traffic on one site has more than DOUBLED since then. I know that from increased stats in Analytics.

Each time the algo is tweaked means that the stats become less reliable for the ENTIRE time, I think. I noted that Alexa updated their stats page. But it didn't seem to improve their stats accuracy at all.

When buying/selling links you need to either provide access to an analytics account or ask for access to a similar stats mechanism that is reliable and trustworthy. Everything else is shooting the moon.

I've never cared about Alexa, and never downloaded the toolbar.

On the other, some people may care, so if your site ranks very well, it could make for a good selling point to some buyers.

But if it ranks low, I wouldn't mention it at all.

In a way, it's kind of like testimonials: Some people don't care, but some do...so adding them can make a difference.

I don't care in the least. I think there are actually better metrics available now anyway, such as compete.com
