Need to self host my videos for a product

Okay, so..

I'm trying to complete a product on a budget here. I'm putting together a video product and need a place to host my videos other than public video hosting sites like youtube.

I first tried Wistia, however they're too expensive. I then tried to upload them to hostgator and use a free video player. Couldn't get it to work.

I looked at amazon S3 and it's pretty complicated and a little bit of overkill for what I'm looking for.

Can anyone help me with getting the correct format of video uploaded to my wordpress site, and suggest the right video player that will work once I have it uploaded properly?

Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks!

For a budget solution, this is the right answer. Get it to work. There's definitely a learning curve, but you will need to either learn something or buy something, and learning is free. Beat your head against this brick wall until it comes down.

EDIT - Also, YouTube is excellent at converting video. If you upload to YouTube as private, then download the MP4 from the YouTube video manager and delete it from your channel, you will have a known compatible format that works in almost all players. I have about a dozen different video converters, and it's really easy to screw up the video in a way that it doesn't stream for crap until you spend another hour and a half converting it again. Don't even pay any attention to all that technical stuff. Let YouTube do it. Click, wait, click, save, done. Works every time.

The youtube trick seems like a great idea - you would probably have to check with Hostgator if you're allowed to host videos on their shared hosting account (I'm guessing you're on one of these)

EDIT: I just found something here: http://support.hostgator.com/article...video-or-music

Seems like that's the only types of video you are allowed to self-host on a shared account

Well... I've already attempted to upload a video to my server through FTP and it allowed me to upload the entire thing. So I don't think that's the issue. I think it's just a matter of video format that matches with a video player...

Holy hell.. No wonder companies like Wistia exist. That seems like a lot of work..

This is such a headache. I may just break down and pay for a hosting service...

At the top of the How do I set up streaming video or music? « HostGator.com Support Portal link previously given:

"Many people have questions about media steaming support for their sites. Unless you have a dedicated server, HostGator supports only "HTTP Streaming" which is real player, quicktime, and windows media player."

A search for "http streaming mp4 with quicktime" on Bing provided this link:

          And there it is.

PM me. I'll host it for you temporarily and send you a link to embed it. It's from a fast streaming server and it'll see you through until you get sorted in a month or 2 if you want.

    Hey Cory

Don't overlook Amazon S3 - it is not as complicated as it seems.

I have 5 videos on a membership site, about 500 members, the most it has cost me in a month is $2.50 - and I have had absolutely no problems at all.

Basically, create your video, put it through something like Handbrake to optimise it, upload it to your S3 bucket, and embed the link.

    Hope you find a solution.

See, there in lies my problem. I have no idea how to optimize the video, how to format it correctly... Basically, I don't know how to make it playable on the internet.

      This is where I'm stuck..

S3 sounds good. I would definitely go that route if it's anything like Wistia or Vimeo Pro.. As long as I can get the video to play on the internet without any problems for my customers then that's all I want..

I 2nd looking at Amazon S3 again. There are plugins out there that greatly simplify the process.

Invest 5 bucks on Fiverr and get somebody to do it. Heck, maybe for another 5 bucks they'll teach you how you can do it on your own.

This can save you hours of frustration trying to figure out why things aren't working.
