Is this jeapordizing my open rates?

Right now I'm not giving users a freebie after they optin. The value comes in the emails I send them as I reveal a 4-step system to profiting with list building.

I feel like I should get a freebie out there as that may be one of the factors of my low open rates.

(If it helps I've built up this list entirely through solo ads)

What I'm doing now is after they opt in I redirect them to a page that says to check their email, and then they're redirected to a ClickBank offer.

What do you guys think? Should I get a freebie set up?

If you build your list on freebies, you get lots of deadweight. I have stepped away from that model. Use free info instead. 3 accessible pages that get them excited, they have to sign up for the 2 remaining juicy pages. Don't redirect them to CB. That's cheesy. Instead take them to a page that builds your credibility by clearly laying out what they will be receiving and what they should expect.

Writeaway is right. I know an expert marketer that makes a few million a year and he tells his students the same thing. All of his lead capture pages have one goal in mind and that is to create curiosity. Curiosity is a powerful force that will get people to give up their name and email.

Basically, he's a bit disappointed and the problems with them might be contributing to your results.
