What to do with my site for guys?

Hi guys,

I'm here to ask for some help/advice.

I launched a Q&A community for "guy questions" (www.manism.com) about a year ago, abandoning it after 6 months since I couldn't seem to crack 500 visits per day, and the bounce rate remained stubbornly high at about 80-90%, despite trying many things to reduce it, and increase traffic.

In the last month or two, traffic has climbed naturally to nearly 1k visits per month (although the bounce rate remains the same, with 6% return visits), so I feel like it's time to turn my attention back to it. The premise of the site is to attract experts in various categories that guys are interested in, from dating to fitness, to use the site as a form of lead-gen for their own businesses.

I thought one way to monetize would be to sell the services of said professionals directly on the site as well as their products, ebooks etc. and take a cut. That said, I have not attempted to elicit strong interest just yet, and I am also considering whether 1000 visits per day is a significant enough number to consider putting some advertising up?

In general, I'm just looking for some direction or ideas as to where I might go from here, so any input would be extremely appreciated.

  • Zak,

Interesting website you have there. You might hear varying answers as to when advertising is appropriate to put up. Some believe there is no threshold and you can put advertising up as soon as the site launches and others believe that you should wait until you have x amount of visitors.

My own opinion is that 1k visitors is not enough. You have to think about how people view your brand/business and if it is strong enough to survive the intrusion of advertising on the site. Its great that you are receiving more visits but your main focus now should be on building equity with your users. You have to make the site a place they want to come. Make it a part of their daily or weekly routine. Position it in a way that makes it helpful for them and not just some cash cow.

Of course there are pros and cons to both scenarios. Here is a post that might be helpful,
