I want to create a site like iwriter.com [suggestions needed]

I want to create a website like iwriter.com. I have a few questions:

- Do I need any special script?
- How much capital do you think I will need?
- Is it profitable to have this kind of site?

If there already is a website that is popular, why would you want to copy it?

What new things could you implement on the website?

  • I am not saying I will copy iwriter.com. I said I want to create a site that has a similiar concept as iWriter.

Regarding new things, let's see what I can do. Maybe I will charge lesser fees compared to iWriter and other sites.

I may also arrange monthly contests where members can win cool prizes or cash.

If you cannot differentiate from your competition in some way or the other, then you will wasting your time. You should never build a "me too" business. Well you can, but it will be really hard to dominate the market. This is something they taught me in my business schools

I don't think they have much competition yet.

Though elance, odesk, freelancers, etc have all similar base, iwriter deals exclusively on content and I haven't heard or seen any major competitor yet.

Ya, you could do it, why not. But, be prepared to pay a lot for marketing. It's not that easy to get clients, though it is very easy to get writers (they are always looking for work).

Once word gets out, you'll start getting a lot of writers, so you'll need to speed up your marketing to get enough work for all those writers. If you are not fast enough, they'll start saying your site does not have enough work. You know how it goes. So, be prepared for all of that.

        hi mate,

did you write the features section? You really need to get that part looked at. The description in most of the features is poorly written and would stop me from using the site

Your right Anton I am going to get that rewritten.... Its funny I purchased this site for under $30 dollars. I saw it in Flippa and the auction was ending in 1 minute so I just grabbed it. There was no gameplan just wanted to see if I would win the auction. It was a good learning experience.

nothing wrong with developing a similar concept at all. If we just stuck with one type of product, there would be little variation and the likes of Apple wouldn't have existed. The key is developing a strong Unique Selling Point within the site, go for it!

Don't copy, take iwriters idea, and then take another great idea and then put them together to make something unique.

You want to try and better your competitior!

Something you could do, would be to have a more rigid application process to ensure quality writers. that way you could charge more. Sites like Iwriter and textbroker are hit or miss because the writers are only concerned with producing as quickly as humanly possible, and not quality content because the pay is so ridiculously low. I've used both services and have seen some really bad material coming from even the top level writers. If a service paid writers more, but were more exclusive, you could drum up a ton of business. Just my 2 cents.

These days, you do not much time to start any website. Like me, I read this iwriter clone script post and download and now my site is working online. So buy a script, get custom template and start making money after marketing.

I can't answer the first 2 questions, but I'm 100% sure that such a site could definitely be profitable.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of "baby" writers out there who look to get their feet wet writing for content mills (stay-at-home moms are usually suckers for them, too).

There's no question as to whether you could turn over a decent profit, provided that you market the hec out of it (you'll need to to compete with iWriter).

    Good luck!

    Regards,
    JR John

I dont think you're going to be able to undercut them. They sell 300 word articles at $2 a pop. You won't find any writers.

If you figure out a good angle, make sure you invest in a kick a$$ database and interface. One of the things that makes iWriter so good is their ease of use and quick turnaround time.

    - Do I need any special script?
Yes, it needs order tracking, escrow tracking, support tracking, etc.

    - How much capital do you think I will need?
    clone scripts $200 - $2,000 - custom development $4,000 to $20,000

    Getalancer: $900.00

    http://www.agriya.com/products/freelancer-clone

(agriya: this is not a recommendation - I have heard their support is terrible and scripts buggy)

    - Is it profitable to have this kind of site?
Maybe - so many people are looking for content - if you can delivery high quality at reasonable prices maybe.

As an application developer (mostly Content Management Systems), I have a little different view on this.

Any existing web service has it's limitation and/or niche.

So to modify and improve upon any existing business model is always possible: time + money + experience + trial + error + trial + error = success.

But even iWriter has it's problems. Try registering and you will see a 404 error. I notified iWriter over a year ago about this. So my guess is they are not taking on any new business.

You could purchase a clone script and have it modified (clone scripts are notorious for bugs).

Or you could hire someone to develop from scratch.

But before your begin please understand the biggest problem is not the website (application).

With these types of services (freelancing), the key is "guaranteeing" an acceptable product to the buyer - which makes you the middleman.

This means collecting the buyers funds within an escrow account until the buyer is satisfied with the final product. Then you release the funds to the writer and keep your percentage.

You also have to negotiate issues and the solve the problems.

This freelance setup is very time consuming. Especially for the low-end $5-$10 copy writing jobs.

If you are passionate about copy writing, I suggest starting a small "copy writer directory" site and enlist other copy writers to join you.

Let all writers bid freely on any jobs that get submitted.

Then have the buyers pay the winning writers directly via PayPal - 25% down - 75% upon completion.

Then the winning writer pays you either a small commissions or a monthly membership to bid on jobs.

Then the buyers publicly rate the writers for the services received. Low rated writers will go away - high rated writers make money - and you do not have the headaches of escrow or being the middleman.

If you ARE NOT passionate about copy writing, I suggest walking away from this idea. Follow your passions.

    To Your Success, Mark

Yes. It can be done with Wordpress , too. You just need the right premium themes+ some premium plugins.

    - How much capital do you think I will need?
It depends on your programming skills. But in general if you have knowledge about PHP and CSS, it would be much, much cheaper.

Maybe. Try it and keep in mind the post from flipfire.

    Good luck!

I certainly would not even attempt to compete in this marketplace because I got a good deal on a website.

If you really want to pursue it, you will need to do some heavy research and come up with an angle, then be prepared to spend some (probably serious) cash.

iwriter had a successful launch, but I believe it was backed by people with extensive experience in Internet Marketing who saw a need and filled it.

Hi, I'm the owner of HireWriters.com. I can tell you that it was a very involved process, that is on going and very time consuming.

It was about a year of development, and the costs have run into the six figure range now.

Not trying to discourage you, but that is what it entailed for us.

    Hi, Iam selling this, BuyContentWriter.com

The reason i built that site was so i can buy content from my own network. Iam too busy to promote it.

If you want to provide content, why not start 'at the bottom' and work your way up?

Lots of people need content, especially quality content.

Once you start building a network of people who need content or you build a list of people who need content, you could switch to a more 'auction style' process like iwriter AND MANY OTHER WEBSITES WHO USE THAT PLATFORM.

It's important that I point out, iwriter didn't invent that model and anyone who says you need to find something creative or unique to sell before you sell it is only hindering your success.

Do you really think the guy who owns a 7 figure plumbing company in my town was the first plumber ever? Not a chance. He found a need and filled it.

If you want a unique product or website idea good luck proving the concept. If you want to provide solutions and build a realistic business, find a need and fill it. That's what being an entrepreneur since I was 14 has taught me.
