Self Hosted Mailing List vs Aweber/Get Response

Hey all! So my email lists are getting pretty big (100k+) and they are getting really expensive each month.

I have seen a ton of the "big" guys out there with huge email lists using self hosted email lists (with things like: ARPreach.com, sendgrid.com, officeautopilot.com, etc)...

What are you thoughts on these? I really like the idea of having control over my lists and not having to pay my massive fee each month.

I actually use Digital Access Pass and they have a mailer feature; however, I am worried that my delivery will go down. If I hook up Digital Access Pass's mailing feature to AuthSMTP or Amazon SES will that ensure I have delivery rates like Aweber or GetResponse?

Anyone tried these? How's delivery?

First of all what is the cost per month? If it's cutting too much into your profits then I would probably recommend culling your list if it's not earning you enough to comfortably cover those costs.

This is where list quality over quantity comes into play. A quality list of 100,000 subscribers should be able to make tens of thousands of dollars per month and thus the autoresponder fee I wouldn't think cuts into that very much at all.

But if you are making much less than that then you are probably hosting a whole lot of subscribers that are making you no money at all. So a smarter option would be to do some testing and tracking and culling all of the subscribers who are not opening your emails or buying anything.

When I usually see people complaining about the cost of their autoresponder it's almost always an indication of the quality of their list. Just saying that in general. Obviously I don't know your own situation.

I agree. I recently stopped building on a list of about 18,000 subs. because after over a year of trying - these people don't open their email. They buy off my site but I believe the demographic is email spam/scam phobic to the extreme. It's a rare niche where the money is not in the list. Deleting them was the thing to do.

It all boils down to DELIVERABILITY. It only takes a few SPAM BUTTON pressings for your domain's mailer system to ALWAYS DELIVER........ straight to the spam folder.

This is why I use only Aweber for all my lists. Aweber = white listed by almost all mail services.

This is partially true. In a recent test Aweber's delivery rates didn't compare to one of their main competitors. And both of them couldn't compare to a free service that is out there during that testing.

Then the following week Aweber beat out the competitor but not the free service.

My whole point here is the delivery rates are a moving target. They're aren't constant. I've been with Aweber for about ten years and I've never been able to match the delivery rates that they brag about.

I still use them because their service is great for what it costs and the customer service is very accessible and generally helpful. But I wouldn't say they have the best delivery rates as a whole.

The headache of running a self-hosted solution is simply not worth it unless you're really tech savvy. I prefer to allow the professionals handle the most important element of my email marketing, which is deliverability.

Ya first hting you should do is clean your list or hire someone on odesk to clean your list for you. This will most likely cut down on your costs significantly

If I had a 100k list... the relatively small autoresponder fee would be so trivial that i would probably pay double for it. You should roll with Aweber or Getresponse. Arpreach is pretty good, but Aweber is very easy to use and maneuver with...

...well, i guess that may sound bias - since this is the only autoresponder that i use lol.

I was searching WF for "GetResponse" and landed on this page. I just would like to ask all those who responded if they ever tried GetResponse or if AWeber is still the best choice? I have GetResponse myself and am at a complete loss on how to use it! It is SO automated that the rigidity makes it impossible to maneuver.

I use both, but your self hosted can cost you a packet, I use these for my high end, high paying clients, so it does not really matter.

So you will have to weigh up the costing to see if it is for you. If you are just starting out, you do not want extra overheads.
