Marketing my idea? Im new to this :)

Gday Everybody,

Firstly I just wanted to say how good this site is! As somebody who is just starting out this is a great resource. I am currently putting together a guide on how to start a career in the mining industry in Australia. I have put together a website which still needs some work. I was hoping that you may be able to have a look and let me know what you think? I would also appreciate any suggestion on marketing the site?

Future plans after the ebook is to put together some training programs which can be completed online.

What do you guys think? Would you do anything different?

The website is On The Mines | Your #1 guide to mining careers

Thanks in advance

    Site looks good.

I did not know that you can make $110,000 to $150,000 a year working on the mines. Not my cup of tea that work but at the pay looks good.

How ya goin? First off, great work taking action both with building the site and joining up here!!! Going to throw a few ideas out for you below... Take what you like, leave what you don't!

First off, when the page loads, with how the image is in there and the text on the left and the right of the image, my eyeballs just jump all over the place... From the left column, to the image, to the logo, back to the image, then to the 'Mailing List' text and then back to that bold, dark image.

In all that bouncing around, the only time I'm noticing anything to do with your niche (mining) is in the image... and with the smoke stacks in the logo, that looks more like a refinery or something. So as-is now, it is slightly confusing/distracting.

As a general rule of thumb, you only have 4-7 seconds to make a connection with a visitor, so I'd consider cutting down on the distractions and getting more pertinent info up top.

Specific example would be in your left column of text... I'd put 'How much do you actually get paid on the mines?' up top, so it loads above the fold. I'd also consider re-phrasing that to 'How Much Can You Make On The Mines?' because I think that is a more realistic question that your target market is asking.

I'd then move the image down below the text box on the left side, also, so it doesn't keep pulling the visitor's eye away from the important text.

With these two changes, the visitor can load the page, glance at your logo... then down to the "How much do you actually get paid on the mines?" headline... Ok, starting to make sense, then the natural movement of the eye is to the right column... and it all falls apart! Well, not that bad, but the relevance of mining isn't reinforced again, which is important to do here.

Right now you say " Mailing List
Enter your name and email to subscribe to our mailing list. We keep an eye on the jobs and email you when we find ones we think you all may like! Subscribe now for a free copy of the book, A Professional Approach to Resumes and Cover Letters."

Maybe you could go with 'Get The Best Mining Job' instead of 'mailing list' and then 'Top mining job updates and a free ebook to help you write a resume and cover letter that will help you land the best paying mine jobs in Western Australia'

I'm really just trying to throw out ideas to help you get the idea... Mining up top, mining jobs in the main headline, mining jobs in the opt in area... Possibly drop the locations ( isn't western Australia the big mining area?) where mining is most popular.

With those changes being made, the eye will start at the top left then scan the main headline then scan the opt-in area and within 4-7 seconds they will know whether they are in the right place or not...

You would also want to justify you text so that it looks organized. apart from that the site looks good.

    Thanks for the great advice!

Hpgoodboy, yep mining pays very well in Australia! Mainly due to the fact that the work is remote.

Melanie and Miles, Thanks heaps for the huge write up! You point out alot of issues which I had not considered. I agree the logo may not represent the idea of the site. I also would like to focus on the processing industry but I think that the logo should match the title of the site. I will also change the mailing list section and blog title sound so much more natural the way you write!

Again I appreciate your awesome advice!

Hi, the site looks great. For marketing I would do a few things that a do for my other sites. I would set up a capture form so you are able to build a list of customers. AWeber makes that easy to do and add to your site. Also, I would set up some SEO to rank your site organically. That works very well. To me when you set up a new site, the most important thing is to start to create a list. The reason for that is so that now you can interact with them at anytime you want offering promotions, sales, or whatever you choose. You can use your Ebook as a free giveaway for people in exchange for them giving you their personal information (name and email address).

Perhaps you could also describe some of the benefits in addition to the money. Closeness to Asia, cheap housing in WA etc.

My first instinct (apart from the fact that I think you'd benefit from having at least a brief summary of what the site's about above the fold -- right now, note about mining jobs aside, you'd think the site's major focus was writing resumes) is that you need an editor. I caught a few typos ("miss conceptions") and you've formatted your numbers in all sorts of different ways (with commas and without, with dollar signs and without).

Overall, I think if you had someone run through it for grammar and spelling, etc., I think it would read as a lot more professional.

Everybody thanks for the great responses!

I am currently in the proccess of getting aweber set up which would hopefuly help with the list building.

100% agree with the proof reader idea. I am a pretty bad writter in general so I think I am going to enlist some help with article writing in genral.

Currently brainstorming a new logo, I think the current one doesnt represent what the site is about. Any suggestion? Maybe even a tagline which summarizes the site?

And get some SEO sorted. SEO is something I need to learn alot more about as the site doesnt even rank in google at the moment.

Last but not least finish the ebook!!

      Any other suggestion?
