US Banks rejecting international online payments?

Fellow Warriors,

I am using Web Payments Pro to accept credit/debit card payments. My business is based in the UK but the majority of customers are in the US. Many payments fail because many US banks automatically reject online international payments, even if I charge customers in USD. I have been in contact with PayPal and they say the problem lies within the US banks, who reject international payments for security.

I have lost business because of this, I can see the failed payments and the customers don't email or try again - they just disappear.

Is there a solution to this international business problem? The UK is a very safe place to do business as far as I am concerned.

I agree James about the UK being a safe place to do business. Probably even safer than most places because of chip and pin.

Maybe the issue is more to do with Web Payments Pro. I used to use Barclays merchant services and never once had a problem with overseas cards. Mind you that was a few years ago and things may have changed.

I'm currently using just regular paypal to receive payments, and have not had any issues, excepts for recurring billing payments, which I've had some difficulty with on and off. But that is with customers in the UK.

Hope you get it sorted. Let us know how you get on.

I use the lloydstsb merchant and card service and previously used Barclay's merchant service. Actually, while taking a legitimate payment non of my transaction got bounced or blocked. Most of the cards are accepted via Barclay's merchant system.

Barclays Merchant is the best solution. I don't know of any reason why international transaction would be rejected. Maybe you need to change to barlcays merchant if you are with someone else...

Quite interesting. Have those rejected cards been debit or credit cards? I'd assume international debit card online payments might get flagged more easily.

maybe your merchant services provider have some issues. and they might not telling you because of inner problem. I suggest you use other payment methods like Barclays Merchant.

otherwise everything else is fine on the surface of internet Business and PayPal is going fine.

Thank you for your advice. I will investigate Barclays, I assume I can also accept payments in USD as well as GBP? I guess I will also need a Barclays business account.

I have been on the phone to one of my customers and he said he approached the bank and he said the reason was because it was an international payment.

This really does suck because the US is the largest market and I need to tap into every potential customer. Payments are failing on a daily basis

No, you shouldn't need to have a business account with them as their merchant services are a separate division. Unless you need to take payments offline, you would only really need their online service.

Thanks for your help, I'm now going through the process of investigating barclays.

PayPal is still failing many payments. Their customer support have said this:

Here are some reasons why your customers card issuers may not have authorised the charge:

The card issuer might have had technical problems
The card issuer may have blocked the temporary charge because it didn?t fit the normal spending patterns
The card may not support online payments
The Customer might have exceeded the limit on their card

Which is perfectly acceptable, but there are payments that fail every day! Is this normal? For all you folks who process payments online, how many payments fail for you?

    Thanks

    DamTheMan,

Open a Skype account if you don't have one and call them up.
Talking with them, you may find out other alternatives.
