Is Travis Sagos Bum Method Flawed?~ Can you Explain?

I read Travis Sagos Bum Marketing Method....

He says to put in Google a phrase you want to target such as "how to train your dog to stop barking"

However, just because it appears in the search results...doesnt mean people are searching for it? It could just be a phrase listed at different sites ...
and no one or very few are actually searching for it...

Correct?
If so this is a big flaw in his system...or am I understanding it wrong?

Travis tells you to do that to assess the competition... that's all that is good for, he doesn't tell you to only do that one thing in your keyword research

He tells you more about keyword research.. this isn't a flaw in his method, it is a flaw in your understanding of his method

That's not a problem, you just need to dig a little, gather more info and learn the method in full..

The "bum method" is simple and powerful and there are a great many additions to what you can do going the "bum" route.

    Peace

That is a very good thing to check before you use a keyword phrase.

You can use keyword tools to find out approximate monthly search volume. Google Adwords External has a free tool, Wordtracker has a tool with some free and some paid features, and I'm sure people here can suggest plenty of other good alternatives.

According to the Google Adwords Tool, "how to train your dog to stop barking" has a global monthly search volume of 390. So there aren't too many searches, but it's low hanging fruit. Once you dominate a few long tailed keywords like this, the traffic will really add up.

What if you have a key word or phrase that has many results but hardly any searches. Is there a point to optimizing for it? I ask this because as I noted in another post, I am a writer an my client gave me words to optimize for that were given to him by an SEO expert. When I look up these words. I see lots of google results (mostly from his company) but no one searching! I think he was given poor advise but I want to make sure I am understanding this properly.

BTW thanks Jay, Dana and Curtis. Jay ...you have really helped me quite a few times kudos to you!

      Hey LBD

I covered this a little in your other thread.

Keyword tools aren't dead certain, they are guess work from some of the lower search services like DogPile etc..

The best way is to test, get some content out there and see how it performs.

Obviously you can't do this for all the keywords you find. But if you find a few good keywords across various tools, then ramp it up a bit and start getting some stats from your own sites (or your clients')

      Peace

I think you have it backwards. You want to find phrases that have a lot of searches and hardly any results, not many results and hardly any searches.

Search for phrases with high search volume first, then analyze them to find the phrases with less competition.

His methods work very well but it is when you continue to use them and evolve that you see even better results.
