Please help: I have 500 Internal Server Error For 2 Weeks

Hi everyone. I need help and I will appreciate if someone can come to my rescue. I have a football/soccer site that gets on average 30k visits per day unfortunately the site is almost always down ever since a news aggregator picked up the site and the traffic increased ( to 25-30k per day ).

I often get 500 internal server error which hostgator insist has to do with the site optimization. Unfortunately I do not know how to go about this. Is there anyone on here who can help me out? This has been happening for 2 weeks. The site is 80% of the time down for the past 2 weeks.

Site is goonerhead.com - Hostgator messed up the theme but that is not a big problem. I can have it changed and the site looking good again once the problem is solved.

The IP's listed for your nameservers appear to be unresponsive. No ping replies.

intoDNS: goonerhead.com - check DNS server and mail server health

Are you using a virtual server or dedicated? I ask this because both of the IP's for your custom nameservers are in the same subnet and in sequential order. .91 & .92

Well, it looks like the IP's going to that server are not working. There's either a routing issue or they're not correctly bound to the node.

What has their support department said? If this has been going on for 2 weeks, I'd advise looking elsewhere for a provider..

Using Kloth.net I'm not getting a reply. What control panel (if any) are you using on the server?

      Is this a managed server?

Also, got your PM but I do not use Skype. I can help you out on here as best I can without having access to the server. I'd definitely like to know what their support department has said about the problem though.

EDIT: It appears to be a cPanel server.

The last hop before it times out for a few appears to be an IP for Ace Datacenters in Utah, which I believe is where BlueHost is.

The IP's seem to be loading now but the site itself is giving a 403 error. I'd recommend checking the permissions.

With 30K visitors per day, you should definitely be on a dedicated server (especially for a site that uses lots of video, scripting, etc). With that kind of traffic... I'd hate to think how much $ you're losing every day if the site is down 80% of the time!

Also, there's a lot you can do to improve your page load performance, like setting your videos to not autoplay, and also putting all of your Javascript near the end of the HTML file (right before the closing </body> tag is good).

Damn dude, how you let a site with that much traffic go down for so long? You need to use some of that money to get your own dedicated server. You can't expect a site to stay up, when you are paying $10 to share a server with ten thousand other websites

OP said he's using a virtual server.

Even still, the number of visitors does not mean the number of "users". There are a lot of variables at play when it comes to large amounts of traffic and not always warrant a physical server.

How much of the server is he using though, he has many videos and he said "visitors" so I'm guessing most of it is real people. Videos are a resource hog, so imagine the lag his users may experience when many videos are being auto played simultaneously.

True - VPS nodes can be oversold/overloaded just as much as shared hosting can and I'm pretty sure HostGator uses OpenVZ containers for their VPS's.

Unless I'm looking in the wrong place, the videos I see on the site are embedded through Youtube.

    Kingfish knows his stuff.

Also, make sure to delete any redundant plugins / themes.

I had a site once that was literally drowning with traffic and I eventually pulled the plug because I was too cheap to upgrade the server.

    Don't be like me.

Your gtmetrix.com grade really sucks by the way.
