Guide on How To Reply To Forum Threads without Looking Stupid

This post is based out of my pure frustration of seeing so many state-the-obvious replies and basically spam new threads with simple one liners to get as many eyes as possible on their signature links. I'm tired of it, as it bloats the community and makes some people here look like idiots spewing out bad information in topics they obviously know nothing about.

So, without further adieu, I present:

Justin Dupre's Basic Guide to Replying to Thread's Without Looking Stupid

1. Stop and Read the Whole Thread

Many times, an OP might write a long post with multiple questions or statements that need to be addressed. How many times I've seen an OP with multiple questions only have the first one answered can't be counted.

2. Take Your Time

How many people do you see rush to be the first person to reply to a message? How many of those first replies are well thought out and take the time to answer the OP with some significance? Very likely, this is a rare occurrence as as many people rush to spam their sig links as possible.

I know through tracking that simple one liners without much of a reply just to get the first reply get much less clicks than posts on 2nd pages with a well thought out, dedicated response. They also get more Thanks, too.

3. If You Know Nothing About the Topic, Don't Reply

It frustrates me to see people replying that have absolutely no business replying. You're giving poor information to the OP, and to anyone who actually know's what they are doing, you look so dumb.

So many times I've seen this and want to kick that poster in the face. After this post, if I see any crap like that, I'm calling you out and you better have some data to back up your claims.

4. Stop Quoting Smart Replies

I've seen these sig link spammers base their whole spam career around quoting the smarter posts. After each quote, they might add a quick quip like "Yeah, what he said. I do this, too."

Now there can be positives in validating someone's post, but when replying to anything, you should try to provide value in your post. Maybe add some extra info that poster left out if you really do use that method, or clarify on some of the details the poster might have missed.

5. Add Value To Every Post

This goes with number 4. If all you are doing is giving quick one liners, how much do you really think you are helping out? You're not and you know it.

Give away an inside tip, post a link that gives exactly the answer the OP is looking for, be descriptive. Stop posting these vague 1 - 2 sentence posts that add nothing but filler to the post and your post count just so you can spam your links left and right.

6. Thanks and Motivational Posts

Every once and a while a post comes along that is a helpful case study or someone who just had their first profitable day.

I'm all for motivating and thanking these people for healthy posts. They don't come around, too often, and giving the OP the thanks or motivation they deserve to keep providing great content or encourage them to do more is good for them. It'd be hard to build a WF link spamming career out of this anyways

[B]7. More Good Info [B]

Honestly, I think all these link spammers need to be called out. When you have 1000+ posts that are only made up of posts of 30 words or less, that is an issue in my book.

Maybe I'm being a little nit picky, but a lot of my grudge comes out of seeing people that capitalize specifically off of users here, giving very little if nothing in return.

If you have anything productive to add to this list, please post a reply!

The problem with this idea is that some people think they know everything about a topic, when in reality, that is certainly not the case. People reply because they want to be part of the conversation and in an open forum like this, how are you going to keep folks from posting? You simply can't.

Originally Posted by JustinDupre View Post

Justin, come on, just what thread police role are you going to assume? Sure it would be nice to have every post of the highest quality, but this is an open forum where everyone that wants to can join the conversation.

Sure, being helpful is what we like to see, but what helps one may be totally useless for someone else with different needs, abilities and goals. You can't legislate what is going to be good for everyone.

Allen and his staff have set the rules. This forum is pretty successful given the number of daily members frequenting the site. Sure there are some pet peeves that each of us see as needing change.

Trying to convince others to abide by your rules is a losing game. Open forums where anyone can join and express themselves as they desire can't cater to every whim of each user.

Get rid of the grudge, find some tolerance, and relish the fact that a diversity of opinions and suggestions often leads to the best overall answers and solutions.

        The very best to you,

All healthy and valid points. I'm not looking for forum police, nor do I want to police the forums. I stop by here 30m-1 hr per day to post some helpful advice and read some if anything tasty was posted. But I see lots of fake gurus post things that I know is absolute BS as it goes against my millions of clicks in data.

Quite possibly, but it's started some healthy conversation here, which is nice.

Would I call you out if you were talking BS? Absolutely. I have before. I don't appreciate being lied to and seeing others lied to. I'd much rather gather a little heat and hatred in exchange for ending someones rampant BS.

Would I kick you in the face? Probably not. Let's not take this all too literally. I'm still a rational young adult.

I've had my fair share of quick posts and posts that require very little to actually answer an OP. There is a time and a place for it, but I'm talking mostly about people who you and I know are sig-spammers. For everyone that has posted in this thread so far, you know you are not one of them.

Nothing qualifies me to police the forums, and again, that isn't my plan (I don't even have a plan). I'd just like to see more high quality content and less spammy replies. That's all.

Nothing personal, I just think that there is very little that can be done about it, the mods do remove a lot of one liners from newbies where it is obvious that signature exposure is the main objective.

You're right, but at least on the CPA section, I see a few of the usuals posting in every post they can. I know some of them are knowledgeable, but they still resort to sig spamming single liners when I know they can do much more or it's obvious they just don't know what they're talking about and they're just posting to get in on the thread early.

So in the last 42 months since you joined this forum [Dec 2009] you found only 7 posts that qualifies for your thanks  [you only thanked 7 times in all time of yours on this forum]

I honestly hardly look at the thanks button. I think my eyes scan right over it. I couldn't tell you where exactly the thanks button is located just typing this off the thread page.

However, you could look through all my posts and see where I physically type something.

I think Google Adwords probably has a better ROI than the FB ads. But on the other hand, it all depends if you are selling the video of the hammer or the resultant piece of apple that comes from fishing too long.

I agree that we all need to be more sporting in our haircuts too. I for one need to get another one before church this Sunday because they may ask me about the book if I don't.

Other than those two points which I don't agree with, I agree with 3/4 of the rest of the things you brought up in your other post.

Good luck with your new sight.

But, but, but...some one liners are not for sig exposure at all but to add a little entertainment and humor factors into the mix. Like George Wright up there.

I like them and think omitting those would certainly dull down this very amusing yet informative forum that I love so much.

We can't be so serious all of the time...what a drag!

What may be "obvious" to one person may not be so obvious to another, especially a newbie. This forum is/was an open forum at last check. This would have been a great post had it contained any real, meaningful value. What's frustrating is when a person takes the time to write such a lengthy post but can't respond to email requesting more info on a service they are providing.

Instead of writing this long thread and taking yourself WAY TOO SERIOUSLY, you could have spent that time working on your business.

If people feel like writing one liners, they are entitled to. Some one liners say much more than long posts.

I don't think anyone here REQUIRES some kind of guide to tell us what, when, how to write.

Complete waste of time and unjustified rant.

If I would write rules for this forum I would ask for kindness.

I believe we should all be kind even when we disagree with something, but some Warriors prefer to be ironic, rude, or indifferent. I don't believe that they would respect my rule and always be kind with everyone.

Your post is somehow aggressive. It goes against the rule I wish everyone would respect.

We already have a system in place for dealing with rule-breakers. When you see someone violating a rule then use the report post icon that is underneath every user's name. It will be up to the mod who reads it at the time if they want to take action on it or not.

If I see someone do one useless one-liner, I'll usually let it pass. But if I see a trend, then I will report it to the mods.
