Are American Sales People Getting Rude and Ruder?

As part of my business I purchase millions of dollars worth of products globally, and on several occasions I have tried to source some of our products from American producers. I am finding that some of them are unusually rude and a pain to deal with, full of attitude, unhelpful. Essentially I get way better service elsewhere. I deal with these high value sales on the phone.

On the other hand, whenever I deal with low value items via the internet or email I find the Americans better on average than others. Is it just me, or American phone manners worse than email manners? All my web stuff is sourced out of American companies, because the customer service is better than elsewhere.

It could be a negotiation tactic, hover I am about to take a $2,000,000 contract to another country just because the sales people have been totally useless.

  • Remember back in the day when sales people, customer service reps and others took pride in their work. They offered a genuine helping hand, kind word, and a "thank you" for your business. I'm not trying to sound offensive but there is an overwhelming sense of entitlement going on in the world, and frankly it makes relying on anyone scary.

You as the consumer, or purchasers, have the right to call the person out on their behavior. Frankly, if poor service is ok with the company in question, then I would seek a relationship elsewhere. I don't tend to think it is just strictly in America though.

The dollar amount makes absolutely no difference to an employee making minimum wage who isn't going to earn commissions off the sale. If more customer service reps were paid based on commission, you'd see a lot better service

And your certain you are dealing with Americans and not some out sourced call center because? But assuming they are, I would take my business to another company in the US or elsewhere. There is simply no reason to deal with poor service.

IMO, and I might be a little biased being an American, you will find some of the best customer service on the planet in the USA.

Having lived overseas for well over a decade I have seen both good and bad customer service and generally speaking I find American customer support better trained, more polite, and better equipped to to deal with the multitude of issues raised by customers.

I've noticed attitude shift, too - and I'm not talking about online, I'm talking about brick and mortar stores where you are face to face with people. I won't take it. I put the things I intended to purchase down and leave.
I think part of the problem is that employers are becoming terribly abusive to their employees. It seems like they feel employees are slaves and can't do anything about abuse. It makes them cocky, and it completely deteriorates any pride or goodwill in the employee.

I think the other part of the problem is that people just don't know each other in their communities any more, and feel no obligations to strangers. Online, they don't even have to look someone in the face. Unfortunately for them, no face to face contact does not negate bad word of mouth from customers who are being mistreated.

If someone you are about to hand money is rude to you - just go elsewhere.

    Sal's on the money.

Brick and mortar salesmen are hopped up on 4 hour energy drinks, are broke, hate their jobs, and will sell their soul to make a sale.

(Not to mention they feel immense pressure from management to harass customers as soon as they enter an establishment).

That's why the majority of money I spend, I spend it online.

I don't want to deal with some obnoxious spaz.

That equates to a very unhappy buyer experience.

    Just my $.02

@tsx, I don't think it's just Americans - I think as Sal mentioned, it's the attitude shift due to poor working conditions. Some employers think that because jobs are scarce, employees are a dime a dozen, so they can treat them badly and if they quit, they're replaced easily enough.

But it works both ways. Many times it is the customer who is rude, and they deliberately antagonize an employee because they think they can get away with it.

Well you can pick on one country if you will, but I think the true reality is sales in all industries, globally, have taken to standing their ground. Procurement departments worldwide have finally sucked as much profit as they possibly can away from their vendors and get offended when a supplier says take it or leave it... volume means nothing if their is no profit. Unless of course you believe the old adage "We lose money on every sale but make it up in volume". Two Million, Two Hundred Million means nothing if there is no profit in it.

Also, when discussing service are you referring to the way "you" are treated during the negotiating phase or are you referring to how the transaction is handled for your company after the sale? It's my experience that during the negotiation phase, the easily bruised egos generally end up paying more in the long run. "get over it"

But then again, maybe your post is nothing more than a veiled attempt to bash Americans. Which is more likely since your topic has little to do with this forum.
