How To Convert Traffic From India, Indonesia, Etc?

I am always on the hunt for paid traffic sources, and in that hunt, I am always finding networks that have a large bulk of traffic available from countries like India and Indonesia.

I might be a fool, but I honestly believe that the way to make money from this traffic is the same way that we make money from traffic in other regions of the world -- we match the right offer to the right person to get the sale.

I have been reading other threads on this forum, and even from the locals, I am amazed that so many people say that we cannot sell anything to Indians, Indonesians, or any other group of people.

For example, in this thread, many of the locals were very well-spoken, but I found issue in that everyone was talking about selling Internet Marketing opportunities to people who live in India.

They were referring to the social stigma of working for yourself as a reason not to try to sell anything to folks who live in India.

But contrary to public opinion, people from India still eat and buy iPhones, right?

The question is not whether we should try to sell IM Opps to Indians. Instead, the question is what do Indians buy online?

If I have access to millions of Indians or Indonesians on the Internet, what types of things could I show them that they might want to buy?

    sell them bollywood movies

    just kidding,

a friend of mine has a news blog and it is aimed for Indians... after several testing, he found out that phones and holiday packages are the best converting amongst dozens of his tested products...
Now, don't think Indians don't go out on holidays, most of the Indians who use internet belong to upper and middle class, so selling them holiday package is not a very difficult task...

I'm Indonesian, and from my point of view, the main problem is not "type of things we could sell to them online", but

    (1) our people mindset is not ready yet for e-commerce transaction using credit card (from here on lets call it "cc"), they prefer to purchasing things on local store, with debit card, cash, or installment (if you ask local people here, they *almost choose installment payment for buy anything, from furniture to car)
Although there is positive movement in IM world here, (i) Google already accept Indonesia-languge blogs, (ii) Google open their office in Jakarta, thus make local big brand company through their local agency are aware of using Adwords for their alternative promotion beside TV, newspaper, and radio. (iii) More adwords users = more ad selection and more revenue on Adsense publisher.

    (2) here, in Indonesia, IF you are full time IMers, applying for cc is hard (uneffective bireucracy). Because most bank ask for salary slip printout as requirements. Alternative way, if dont have any slip printout, we need to deposit amount of money into them, usually 6-12 months contract, to be able to get the card.

    (3) the biggest payment processor, paypal, doesn't accept ALL of our local bank debit card as a funding sources. the only option is using cc (and payoneer)

    (4) we cannot buy online that require currency conversion (USD/GBP/Euro into IDR or IDR into USD/GBP/Euro), because usually they (merchants) only accept cc, not debit. this include also on "IM Services" that dont support paypal as payment processor, such as aweber, getresponse, adwords, bing ads, etc.

    (5) our 2012 GDP per capita Purchasing Power Parity (in USD), based on worldbank data is only USD 4,636, and Indian USD 3,650, compare with US people USD 48,112, UK 35,598, Canada 40,420, or even our richer neighborhood Singapore 60,688.

    (6) Inquality economy, social, and technology growth-and-spread.

    (7) We are 5-10 years behind you in Technology adaptation, so give us some time to accustom our self to the world flow.

In India majority of the population still go to shops to buy all things... Yes we do buy tablets and laptops but we do only the research part online and then run to shops...

Recently upper middle class and rich class do buy online... and those who buy online, buy almost all things like mobiles, watches, books, etc etc.

also in India I think some India based ecommerce websites like flipcart and olx are more used while buying than amazon or ebay.

so if you want indian buyer then target those high quality stuffs that rich people in india will buy... gen. it can be everything like jwels, fashion clothes, etc etc.

MMO products are no no ... IMO.

Exactly, clothes and jewellery sell well in India. I mean, why wouldn't it, they have amazing designs.

I know from personal experience that you can get a lot of sales from college students, especially girls. You can easily sell shoes, fancy tops, chudis etc.

I think most of the Indian population is more inclined to get a salaried job (even online) or a freelance "job" where they have assured pay, than start a business of their own and risk losing money.

I know how much opposition my dad faced (from friends and family) when he wanted to quit his job and take up stock trading full time.

Another thing is the conversion rate. Conversion rates are at Rs. 60 for a $1 right now, so you can imagine how difficult it would be for the normal population to pay for something in terms of dollars.

Then again, we have a population of 1.2 billion, so if you target only those who have money, I think you'll have a big enough target market?

Indonesian people have consumptive habits. I think every offer if they can get good education about things related, then the'll buy it. It's very easy to brainstorming and get huge benefits from my country.

    Yes aarthielumalai,

Another issue is many Indians don't have credit cards...

And Indians I think want to see, touch, talk to shop keeper and then buy products....

Online security is another thing that Indians are frightened about.

So online buying is less in India but yeah India is progressing slowly.

I was reading an article about - credit card subsribers in Indonesia are about 6.500.000 of 240.000.000 people. The percentage is very little. And internet subscribers are 55.000.000 people. It will grow to 80.000.000 people in next year - 2014.

For Indonesian, I suggest you use free traffic such as Google and Facebook. Indonesian language is easy to do SEO with Google. Unfortunately, if you are not Indonesian, of course you don't know about how to read and write the Indonesian language. However, you can use Google's translation service. Don't forget, the translation is not perfect.

Most Indonesian people ask COD - (cash on delivery) for any pyhsical goods transactions in ecommerce. Because there are a lot of internet fraud in Indonesia.

Another big problem is with mode of payment. there are number of restrictions on Indians while making payment , like debit cards, internet banking dont work for international payment, its is very difficult to obtain credit card if you are not on Job for atleast 6 months, paypal has number of restrictions on Indians (indian bank debit cards dont work with paypal most of the time) and Dollar is too costly ( $1 = 65.24 INR )

I still remember the black Friday of 2012 when i want to buy Hostgator web hosting. I tried every thing that was possible to make payment, asked many relatives of mine for credit card , but no one has it then (finally i have to settle for local hosting then ) . So what i want to say is.. it is not even possible for everyone in India to buy any digital product from foreign simply even when he wish to do so.

Youth form India are very curious creatures and are potential buyers if they see true value in any product, But unfortunately they have no option to Pay for International transaction

In India there have huge population. And the maximum people belong to middle class family so in this case I would say there have very small number of people compare to first world country. So you need to target those are rich but they are few. In Indonesia the people are very consumptive nature.
