Made a site about 90s pop culture.. use of pics?

The site is mostly a handful of blog posts I've written up talking about music, toys, cartoons etc from the decade.

I've been very particular about finding mostly only photos from Flickr that I can attribute that are related to the content. The one thing that's holding me back is with a site like this photos can really drive traffic and there's a ton of nostalgic type photos floating around. Like Buzzfeed, they use a lot of photos but you'll find their attribution questionable.

Or Tumblr, there's always a whole bunch of gifs and memes from the 80s/90s. Is the copyright pretty lose on these type of images?

Its a no, This is not good for long run. Especially if you are planning to monetize your site. You can check istockphoto for low cost images with free royalty.

Copyright laws are never loose. Anytime you're using an image that you don't have permission to use from the creator or license holder, you're taking a risk of getting into serious trouble.

No. If you don't own the copyright to a picture, then someone else does, and unless you have the copyright owner's permission, you can't use it. It really is as simple as that.

There are sources of royalty-free photos, which state the various terms and conditions under which you can take and use them (there are some with absolutely no restrictions at all).

"Celebrity images" are particularly high risk to use, if you don't own the copyright or have permission, because some of them belong to "agencies" who employ people specifically to identify breaches of their copyrights, and have arrangements with contingent-fee lawyers who will initiate proceedings at the drop of a hat. Having a DMCA site take-down notice served on your hosting company can be the least of your problems, if that happens. This really isn't something to "take a chance with" and "hope for the best".

You said you made a blog about 90's pop culture and no one has asked to see it... the world has gone mad.

The 90's was a monstrosity, this I have to see.

    Link it up.

So I changed the theme, here it is: http://the90schild.com

The support for the theme at magazine3.com where I got it from seems kind of lame. I asked if I could change the "tagged as" section and move it below at the end of the content and they said it's not possible..

I always wondered about how sites like memebase etc... get away with using brand references and copyrighted images? Also, some of the most popular memes are just stock photos... do they pay everytime someone creates a meme with a stock photo?

I'm looking at the ebay affiliate program as a great option to be able to post 90s pics, I'm curious as to what happens when an auction ends, do you have to remove the picture from your post then?

This is something you need to get right from day one. It's becoming more and more common for copyright owners to aggressively come after people using their stuff without authorization. There have been several folks in here over the past couple of years that were looking down the barrel of some serious copyright infringement charges.

One company billed a guy for $16,000 for the use of a single image. He'd heard that it was okay to use any image as long as he gave the owner written credit for it. Ugh. Never found out how that turned out but you can be sure he was sweating it. Good luck.

Do a search for free photos and look hard!!! it may take you 30 websites before you find a good free one but they are out there. Don't play with fire.
