Emphasize the Newsletter or the Freebie?

In other words, do you push the newsletter (and when you subscribe you also get this great free product)

or push the product (and you can get it for free when you sign up for the newsletter)?

You should push whatever gives the most important benefit to the potential subscriber so that they will sign up in the first place.

Test your ads and you'll discover the right answer, based on your opt-in rates.

I think that the answer can be found looking at these questions:

    1. What do you want to brand? The newsletter or the freebie

    2. What do you want people to do? To subscribe for the purpose of getting the freebie (the expression "throw away email addresses" tells you something?) or to subscribe and eventually get also a freebie?

    Think about these ...

P.S. After more than 7 years of ezine publishing, I'm no longer a fan of the "freebie bribe style" of getting subscribers. However, if you don't build an ezine where you sell ad space but a "commercial style" newsletter, then you don't have to care so much if you get also "dead" subscribers.

Why not a combination of both...

"Join my FREE Newsletter and receive weekly "REPLACE WITH SOMETHING USEFUL" exclusive to my subscribers..."

That way, they stay on because you're giving them something of value, which keeps them subscribed - and you can stay within the "newsletter" style the Adrian mentioned above (non-throw away's).
