I have a few high traffic blogs where I accept guest posts.

I used to get 2 or 3 offers of guest posts every day and I'd choose the most suitable... ( what some people think is related content is another post altogether)

Any way now I seem to be getting 2 requests a day and 2 requests to remove content. (Maybe a slight exaggeration)

This request usually comes from a new SEO company that have been employed. The request is quite often bordering on rudeness

I take great pleasure in replying with the original request attached and a request for a $10 admin fee

So for all you guest posting crazies... Just because an seo company tells you what your current seo company is doing with guest posts is wrong... Think twice.

Mark, great idea about the $10 fee. I've had a few of those, too - and even threats if we don't comply fast enough to suit them. A couple of threatened to "report us to Google". I laugh when I read that because it shows how little they really know about SEO. From now on ... and admin fee will be required.

Who is telling you to take down content and why? SEO companies? That is very interesting. Do they provide a reason for you to take down your content other than the threat of "reporting you to google"?

What generally happens is a company hires an SEO company and they go and post a load of Guest blogs to get links...

Then They read somewhere that Google hates guest post links so they get a new SEO comapny to get those links removed... BUT they make it sound like you are illegally linking to the site.

For example here is a recent one .. bear in mind the link is there because someone requested a guest post!

Your webpage, <link Removed> has been identified as having links to <link Removed> without <Removed> authorization and must be taken down immediately.

Our legal department will be in contact if you do not comply.
Please confirm that you have done so,

      Thank you.
      My Standard reply was....

The link you refer to was posted to the blog by yourselves or someone acting on the owners behalf.

As this is the case, I suggest a better approach would have been a simple request that didn't threaten legal action and didn't suggest that myself or my staff posted your article with your link without your authorization.

We'll be happy to comply on receipt of the admin fee.

The charge for posts from our blog is $10

Please let me know if you want to proceed

Can anyone point me to the case law where one site linking to another without permission became illegal? Or even actionable?

Mark, glad to hear you're standing up to them.

What percentage of them are complying with the $10 fee? Or do they just run for the hills as if nothing happened? LOL. Love it when you have the knowledge to OWN these companies. Reminds me of a company called Monster Cable that tends to sue anyone with the phrase "Monster" in their brand. From time to time, certain people have stood their ground with endless legal arguments and eventually cause Monster Cable to suddenly say, "Oops...um, okay we've determined you're alright" and back off.

Companies bullying other media is way too common.
