STOP Checking Stats Unless You're Going To Do This

A lot of people that I know are constantly checking their sales
stats... so much that they really get little else done many days.

Of course you want to know how your campaigns are doing, but to
me the biggest reason to check your stats is NOT to get a warm fuzzy
when you see how much you've earned. It's to see which products are
selling and which promotions are working so that you will know what
to continue promoting, and which places work best for your promotions.

Consider cutting out the products and promotions that are NOT
working, and plowing that money and effort into the things that
ARE working ;-)

If you check your stats 20 times a day, make sure that you are USING
that data, rather than just looking at history!

For many people checking stats is just a way to procrastinate :-)

A great, often under-utilized place to check stats incidentally
is your server logs. That's where I come up with a LOT of long-tail
keywords that my customers ARE using, and that I should target more!

Checking stats once a day is more than enough. Checking keyword activity, exit links (if any) and most responsive traffic sources is about all that is actually useful!

  • I used to spend allot of time checking online stats.

To save time, now I just ask my bank teller.

If I like the numbers, I continue what I'm doing.

    By the way, this:

is a great piece of extremely valuable advice and can be very profitable for those that know what to do with it!

When I wake up, Before I sleep is enough for me.

The only time I don't stick to this is if I was doing something that generates much quicker/instant results such as PPC so I can quickly find the best performers and optimize them effectively.

Checking stats should be dependent of the situation. For example, I usually only check my Adsense account once or twice per month. If I see something abnormal I go and see what's wrong. On the other hand, checking PPC campaigns should be done much more frequently. It really depends. However, I agree that it's possible to procrastinate by checking logs over and over again.

    Yes.

When you said, "For many people checking stats is just a way to procrastinate."

    That's very true!

That's just like when people check their email all day just to feel busy or doing a flock of other things (even housework in some cases) to avoid doing what you know it is you should be doing. Less face it no one really enjoys house work all that much, but sometimes "Let me just cut the grass" has a better feel and makes us more comfortable than doing the necessary tasks that are gonna stretch us in business and then guess what...stretch us some more.

It's important to focus on money-making activities.

And yes, there's a big difference between keeping busy and being productive.

I do believe stats tracking for once a day is good enough. Most of the time i track stat is to eliminate non-converting keywords. But it takes time to show if the keyword is doing conversion, so no point checking so many time a day.

Willie's been spying on me! I'm addicted to this and I have my CB account up all day long and I check it at least once an hour. The really bad part is that I allow my mood to be governed somewhat by this... make a sale = happy mood!.... no sales = poor mood. Sales = winning... no sales = losing.

It's a problem for me and one that I needed to have pointed out so... sheepishly, thanks Willie!

I check stats from the previous day, because it's a part of my day job (running a watch forum).

What does everyone here use? I use Google Analytics, but we're going to start using KISSmetrics, MOZ, etc...

I use Google Analytics many places, but some I simply rely upon the
tracking provided by a merchant's affiliate program software.

you are so right Willie a lot of people check so frequently and then become discouraged and even give up because they haven't seen any sales come in but it should not be like that. Usually they give up but if they had continued they might have made a killing with whatever product that they were promoting.

In the beginning it can be exciting or deflating depending on whether you are making sales or not. But after a while as Willie says you are just wasting time that you could be spending in a more productive way. You could always outsource it to a VA who sends you a summary several times a day.
      Cheers

Ye, its basically in the morning and before you go to bed.

If you count how much time you spend on checking stats every minute you will realize that you waste a lot of time actually

      Status is the meter.
It reflects whether there is light in front or dark.

When success came no one bother about status.
Didnt u check ur status frequently at ur start in IM ?

It does not make sense to see the stats in every details and take no action. However a glimpse on the stats summary, once in a day, stimulates to work more.
