So I'm using fatcow and I just purchased another domain for my second site.

So I click install wordpress and it installed. Lo and behold my first site is gone. My first site and second site are now the same.

What happened?

I need to take a walk ....

Are your pages and posts still there?

This is a good reason why you should always manually install WordPress for each new domain you build. If you have your site backed up, you can use the backup to get your site back. If you don't have a backup, call customer support at your hosting company they may be able to restore your site from their own backup servers.

please tell me you backed up your site ?

Ok, one thing you could try at least to recover your posts and pages is go to google and type in "way back tool" then put in your site's URL on the way back tool's website and see if it displays results of your site in the past then click on the results and grab as much info as you can like post/pages etc copy the content so you can put it back on your new site. At least this way you would be able to save some info.

Did you even read anything other than the first post? The host has already restored the site...............

Hehe! Same thing happened to me when I mistakenly install new WP on the same directory name without pointing the new domain to a sub directory.

I panicked and chat with customer care. BTW, I had to pay $15 for backups to get my site restored.

Guess what buddy, other people may have this issue and their host may not be able to help them with it and when they do they can come back to this thread and see this helpful post so FYI when somone asks a question its not only for them to know the answer but other people as well and what may work for one may not work for another so next time think through before you post insulting remarks.

It appeared the OP didn't have backups.

            The host restored the backups.

What exactly is going to be helpful here other than to keep your own copies of backups? So, another person runs an installer, deletes their files, neither the host or the person has backups and they find this thread. Magically, their files reappear again.

No, I have run into this problem before and didn't have a backup when I typed my site into the way back machine it actually captured a historical archive of my site so then from that I copied and pasted the contents and then reposted them on my new site that I had created. So in case people run into this problem and do not have a backup or their host cannot help them at least they can try this workaround to get their content.

This is why backup is so important you never know that when such a mishap will happen.

Contacting customer support should also fix this problem if the errors are on their end.

And when it is backed up (hopefully), make sure you have your own backup system in place, plenty of free and paid plugins that do this with one click set and forget frameworks.

Yeah Romeo is right. I'm using UpdraftPlus to backup to dropbox right now. I don't do it automatically, just when I go in to change things. Like if there's a Wordpress update.

I'm all too used to things going exactly the opposite of the way I want them to. So I don't take any chances when I'm doing things. I should probably back up automatically.

But at least this will probably get you on the path to doing it too. I'm pretty sure your host will be able to hook you up though. But they might charge you, not sure.

    Good luck...

    Fatcow probably won't help you.
    It's an EIG "brand".
Very low quality hosting, no end-user backups, etc.

    So sad.

Well fatcow helped me. The livechat dude was pretty helpful.

They restored it and gave me instructions on how to set-up new domain, which is done by making a pointer in a directory and having the install path there. I dont get it either. Anyways, it's up and im happy

Be grateful that you've learned this lesson so early on, and only lost one site when you could have lost 8. Just one more bump on the road to success....
