Google Analytics Question

Hello Warriors,

I hope I have posted this on the right section.

I have this main domain name, domainname.com and also a subdirectory, domainname/sub .

Now, can I just use the same analytics script for the both of them even if they are two different wordpress installed sites? Meaning, just one account for the both of them?

Any inputs you may provide will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
G.B.

You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. Just set up separate tracking so you know what's actually happening on each site.

I once tried to track traffic from one site to another by integrating them, but it just ended up merging their stats together, so I had no idea what was working.

There might be a work around from this, but I would rather know my stats for sure than mess around with it. Maybe someone knows something I don't know.

EDIT: I missed the that it was a sub domain. Yeah just install the same tracking script on it. Even if it's a different Wordpress site. Just put it in both headers. Easy peasy.

But if you're tracking traffic from one to the other, it should be separate.

If it is just for one domain you use the same GA code on all the pages, sub directory or not. GA figures out the page it is on and gives you a report for that page.

You can but its a bad idea as you would not be able to compare the two without using GA's 'flow' tool. Or by manually checking the landing page. Over all it would be a real pain in the rear. Now you can use the same Google account and make a separate analytic profile so you can keep the stats separate.

Thanks a lot Warriors for your inputs. I really appreciate them.

I think I'll just use one GA script for the both of them.

    Again, thanks a lot.

I would also recommend having two accounts for the two sites. Split testing is always the best in finding out what is working well and what is dragging you down.

    Hi there,

I think you need to know the the difference between “Account” and “Property” within analytics.

Generally, I was using “account” for grouping. For instance, Affiliates, Authority, etc. It could be by niche as well.

Then make your main site and the sub-directory as property.

So you should come up to a decision and setup accordingly about these all..

You may PM me if you need more clarifications.

Well, i will suggest you to use separate tracking code for both domainname.com and domainname.com/sub. Doing this you can get the stats for particular page.
