how do I track conversions/sales from referring websites?

I have been doing a lot of article marketing, posting on forums, social media, online classifieds, PPC , banner advertisement on related niche websites, etc.

I want to be able to track sales/conversions from all referring websites and PPC.

So when I get a sale I want to be able to determine whether my sales came from my article marketing efforts, online classifieds, posting on forums, etc.

How can I do this? Google analytics does not seem to allow you to track conversions back to the referring websites? If Google analytics does do this sort of tracking I can't figure out how to do it.

You can always add some sub text into your domain and track it like that. For example, if your domain is mydirtystevesite.com...........you could put dirty.mydirtystevesite.com, and track it like that.

For my affiliated sites I use hitsconnect which is geared to work on the traffic exchanges. However the easiest way is if you built your own sales page for your affiliate page. Then use google analytics to track the page you built along with a tracking devise like hits connect. Hope that helps

I believe if you combine Google Analytics with Google Webmaster Tools you should be able to track anything you want. There is also some really cool software to track what users do on your website like, "ClickTale" (clicktale.com).

Aside from that, I believe there is way to add tracking to a URL manually. This could be viewable in AWStats or something like that.

I believe you can make a URL domain.com have tracking by making the link look like:

      domain.com/index.html?=campaignname

I don't know if that is the correct syntax, but I believe that is possible. Then using that method you sub campaignname for whatever site you posted the link on such as the Warrior Forum.

      domain.com/index.html?=warriorforum

Then using that information you can view your awstats log and see how many visits came from that link. That way you know exactly what site it came from.

      Hope that helps.

well In my last experience I used to track orders with referral code. Instead of setting up all the tracking urls i come up with an idea to give each member an individual code and a custom offer for there visitors.

I forgot to mention Cligs. Cligs is a free url shortener service that goes beyond what tinyurl does and provides tracking info like the source URL the click came from and geographic info as well. The website is cli.gs.

It would be perfect if Google integrated their conversion tracking into Google analytics so you could trace the sale back to the referring site they came from and also see how they navigated your site.

Why haven't the brain farts at google made this yet? Or did they and I don't know about it yet?
