How do i create PDFs for people to download?

So i have created a document that I want to post in various places, and want to convert it to PDF for people to actually download. I am not looking for an opt-in option (just yet)...simply a 'click here for a free report'.

Anyone care to share the simplest steps to complete this?

Thanks in advance

Alan

I keep the free OpenOffice Writer installed mostly for this purpose. You can import most WP documents and it saves to PDF quite nicely.

If it's made in Microsoft Word - you can save as a PDF.

      Openoffice writer....

Just downloaded PDFCreator, a free app which seems to save to pdf to a place on my computer. I have added links to the document within Openoffice, inserting Hyperlinks....but when I open the PDF the links are not clickable...they are highlighted blue but not clickable?

Also not a clue of how how people actually get this PDF... do I need to upload it somehow to a site first? I am guessing that this is the way, if so how is this done? I am not looking for people to have to go to my site and then read it there, just simply click on a link on a forum, or wherever I put it and they can download it there.

Thanks for all taking the time to reply so far!

If you are using Microsoft Word 2007 and up, you can save natively in PDF format. If not, you can get a free one from PDFForge.org that works well.

Assuming that you upload the PDF file to the same directory as the webpage that links to it, this is the HTML code you would use to link to the PDF file...

      HTML Code:
<a href="xxxx.pdf">Right-click here and choose 'Save Link As' to download the PDF</a>
^ Replace xxxx with the name of the PDF file.

If you want this to be a free PDF for your visitors you need to upload it to your website via FTP software and then insert the URL into your web page. Does this make sense or do you need more detail? I am not sure how much you already know.

Makes sense thanks...something I have never done before and wasn't sure if people did it in this way or used some sort of hosting just for files they upload...if that makes sense...

Now I know the process I will do my research on the ins and outs of how to do it.

      Many thanks people

Yes, a lot of people do use external services to host files such as downloads, reports, videos, audios, etc. Probably the most common one is Amazon S3. It just takes a big load off your server and also makes the downloads much faster for your visitors. It really depends how many people you plan to have downloading your file. If it's just a few here and there then you should be able to get away with hosting it on your own server. If you expect any type of volume though I would recommend using a service like Amazon S3.

In regards to converting documents to PDF, I have used many programs but I now always just use this very simple online converter. Works a charm.

Free Online Doc Converter, Batch Convert to PDF, PDF/A or Image, PDF Converter, PDF Printer.

I'd suggest Google Drive. You can create the doc right in there, and people can download in their format of choice. Just be sure to set the "share" option or people won't see it.
