Peter... I'm a bit confused. By definition, isn't lead generation tied to selling something?
If you don't have something to offer, then you aren't really generating leads, your more just collecting names.

If you are generating leads for something already, are you simply trying to find other things to promote to these leads?

One tip would be to go subscribe to all your competitors' lists and see what they are promoting... Look for affiliate opportunities to promote that way.

...But really, if you are generating leads before you have something to sell, you have the cart before the horse!

The more specific you can be about what you are doing already, the more help we can offer.

We all make mistakes and is part of learning.

More on Peters question:

1. You can monetize your list in many ways and you can at
least introduce yourself to your list and aim to break all
barriers between yourself and your new subscribers.

2. Have a strong message sequence in place to go out to your
new subscribers so that they get to know more about you, your
products and services etc.

3. After that sequence has passed, you can then add your subscribers
to a separate list after let's say the 10 day sequence and you have the choice
of either mixing up promotional broadcast emails with pure content ones or
you can send pure content emails that have your products/services displayed
on whatever page(s) your pure content is displayed.

It all comes down to testing of course and you can even test various
campaigns against one another in most autoresponder services.

Once you know that your email campaigns are getting good response
rates, you then need to track as much of your sales to know where
they are coming from.

This allows you to quickly gauge which emails are performing for you
so you can focus on using those at the front of your sequence.

There are of course lots of other approaches you can try but
making a start is always key to your success.

Thanks for the helpful answers all. I guess i should have provided a better description of what it is I am trying to do.

I want to generate leads (people interested in a particular service) that I can then sell to providers of that service.

which generated moving leads.

What I am looking for is a book, or other resource, that I can read in order to familiarize myself with the lead generation business.
