How Do I Monetize An Article Directory?

My article directory gets 100-150 submissions a day and now contains over 9000 articles.

Could anyone who owns a directory suggest a way to monetize it. I do not want to use adsense. I have tried hosting but the conversions are some of the worst I have seen which I suspect is typical with article directories.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated so I can make money with my directory.

You could sell featured listings or members only advertisments. If they know they are not competing with the rest of the internet it would provide an incentive for them to purchase advertisements on the site.

Yeah get rid of all ads and be 100% ad free .. Then charge for membership... Nothing worse then all those stupid ad sense ads being plastered all over your great article that you just written to drive traffic to your website.

Personally many article directories I refuse to submit to because they plaster ads all over the place.

Use Adsense or look for the "Clickbank Ads Creator" and create Adsense-style ads that actually point to Clickbank products.

Also, consider an upgraded membership option that allows more features than the standard version.

Have you found this solution to work? That is the "Clickbank Ads Creator"?

Depending on how long it takes to approve at the moment - why not have a "express approve" charge? Amazing how many people want to see their name in lights as quickly as possible.

I second this idea - I've been guilty of similar tactics where I've paid extra to see my name on something quicker.

It's been a while since I've ran an article directory but when I did I would upsell SEO services, the conversion rate was low (did maybe 2 sales per month) but the profit margins where really high ($2,000 setup fee)

You might want to look into a clickbank ad rotator like mentioned above and then have it customized so that you can offer an "every other sale" commission or 50/50 revenue sharing. I am sure your members wouldn't mind ads plastered in their articles then.

You could also provide upgraded accounts. For free members offer an ad supported model. For paid members offer 2 levels. The first being a revenue share model. The second being a ad free model. Almost like putting a Squidoo spin on the Article Directory sites.

Of course don't forget about all the other ad services out there like Amazon, B&N, eBay, etc. Provide as many options as is possible to your members.

You could also build a team of per job writers, seo'rs, etc. and then turnaround and sell those services to your members.

Ok some really great responses in this thread!

I am leaning towards a clickbank solution or SEO solution as mentioned above.

Any more ideas would greatly be appreciated.
