Twitter's magic dust...

OK, we know some people hate Twitter.

That's cool.

But millions more absolutely love it.

But why?

When you distill it down to its bare-bones concept, just what the heck is it about Twitter that has turned it into the global phenomenon it has become?

And whatever the "magic dust" is, will it last?

Cheers,

Neil

I see a normal fad, like there has always been in the world.

However, since when do fads really die, there will always be the group of consumers who still have their chia pet, or pet rock.

How many still play with Yo-Yos, or Tamogachis.

Twitter is on a much bigger scale, it will soon hit it's maturity, but not neccesaryily die, it is a great marketing tool and customer relationship tool, that it won't leave our Internet, may lose some members, but certainly not leave.

I believe that, much like anything else that is the "next hot thing", that Twitter will continue to be a valid method of communicating, relating, and marketing on the internet, but it will spike then fall off before eventually reaching a plateau.

I believe the reason it has become so popular is because it offers a way to get your voice heard by possibly millions of people, to connect with people all over the world, and to have instant access (whether real or not) to your favorite celebrity.

I believe it is here to stay, but will always be a mutating clientele. People that were posting daily 6 months ago will fade off and new people will come on everyday. There will, of course, always be the people that are constant, but they will be the few.

That is my opinion on what makes Twitter so hot and whether it will last.

    Neil,

Woody is dead on with why it became a fad, we use Twitter in our clic of marketers and consumers who buy information products, but there are millions who use it in the way that it was created.

Keeping touch with friends via a web interface similar to text messaging.

Now that the twitter ethusiastics can be in touch with a celebrity all hell is breaking looose

The celebrity thing seems to have helped get it into the limelight and that has obvious helped its popularity.

    More celebrities onboard.

Instant messaging was a bit like that and it took off big time too.

Yet something else about Twitter caught people's imagination because people could have said "aw, we've already got instant messaging, we don't need Twitter".

Actually LMC, I take that back.

Twitter is much more like SMS because you just kind of send off your message. You don't need to have someone on the other end like you do with instant messaging.

I never paid too much attention to Twitter until it started appearing on CNN recently.

I started an account about 3 weeks ago to promote an offline business of mine and I really dont know how "effective" this will really be as I am in the infancy of my marketing campaign on Twitter.

I only have about 115 followers and I do not know how many of those 115 could be local actual prospects that I can turn into a paying customer.

Is it all hype or does one get actual business sales and genuine leads from Twitter? If you have an offline biz I would also be interested in hearing your opinion and strategies on Twitter. Great topic.

I would NOT say it is all hype. If you are interested in getting actual business sales and leads, here is what I would do:

      1. Download Tweetdeck (TweetDeck: a simple and fast way to experience Twitter)

This is the easiest application for keeping track of different groups of Tweeters. I would recommend separating them into Local Leads, Similar Businesses (from around the world), and Friends and Family, etc.

      2. Download TwitterLocal (twitterlocal.com)

Put in your city name and the distance away from it you are interested in leads and it will post all tweets from that area. Start to follow as many people as possible from your local area.

      A) Quite a few will automatically follow you back.

      B) Start to get personal with some by answering personal and business questions or comments...so that you are a real person that runs a business.

      3. Use TwitterSearch (Twitter Search)

Use this feature to search for tweets and questions relevant to your business. Be helpful and start conversations. You will learn from and possibly find other business owners (from around the world) that will be able to help you as well. If they have a bunch of followers or seem to be doing things you like, then pay attention and do as they do.

      4. Get Regular Customers and Friends and Family on Twitter

This is also to show that you are a real and relational business. It can also be used with the customers for support or questions so they don't have to come all the way to you.

If I were you, that is where I would get started and take it from there. You learn the more you use it. Good luck with your business.

    Hey Kelly

    I like that one.

Just like SMS, it's so easy (and fun!) to send a quick message to people that have chosen to receive it, without the pressure of composing a novel or worrying too much about spelling and grammar.

And it's equally fun to receive it, because you know it's someone you want to hear from.

Maybe the "no spam" thing comes into it because the recipient controls whose messages they receive.

all these social networks just create more information clutter...

but its not just hype ... ppl luv expressing random thoughts and luv it when ppl actually pay attention to them via "followers"...

I think its voyeurism at its best... and that's the type of society we are... we luv to watch train wrecks or peek into ppl's everyday clutter...

bottom line is we are all naturally curious... we love people watching and judging others.

Following people's daily lives entertain us, be that it is sad, exciting, something new, something creepy.

This is why these networks bring all sorts of people to it, including pyschos

I've only messed around with Twitter a little bit. I can understand people liking the idea of shooting off a random thought or cool link they found every now and then. I guess that can be fun.

But here's where I am confused. Are people actually watching others? Yes, you have followers - but are they really following? I am following some people on Twitter but I don't ever look at their updates because I don't really care. I think people THINK that people care about their updates more than they actually do.

It is a decent marketing tool, though. I'm involved in the offline niche and I started to follow a few local businesses. And to my surprise, many have followed back. Them just seeing my page is free marketing for me.

Speaking of fads...anyone remember Pogs? When is that going to come back?!!

I don't think Twitter is going to die off any time soon, if ever.

The reason is that it gives us everything we do want, and keeps out most of what we don't want.

It gives us an easy, free way to communicate with others who have interests in specific areas.

It does this without needing huge time commitments, or any commitments at all really.

The only thing it doesn't block out is spam, but you can easily do that along the way by blocking people that bother you.

Twitter is fast food communication for the masses. It won't die out any more than actual fast food, or as someone said, SMSing will.

Fads die out because they never had any real lasting value. Twitter does. I think it's here to stay.

Gotta be the total ease of use. It's dumbed down for the masses, and the masses have responded accordingly. OK, that's what I think is the main reason.

But I have to say that a close 2nd is ego boosting. It's like crack for a lot of people to think that their (mostly) inane ramblings about their lives matters to all those followers they have on Twitter.

The minds behind T (it's popular enough to get a one-letter name now, like G) are genius. I'm pretty sure they're aliens with bulbous craniums who have studied us from afar for years now. T is but the first step in their master plan to enslave humanity. Pretty sure that's how it's gonna go down.

Ok I think I've fully understood why Twitter is what it is - brilliant...maybe.

About 4 years ago - everyone went mental for blogs "OMG YOU CAN SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE DOING" (insert lots of OMG)

But, time moves on and people realise blogging is a pain in the arse. Seriously, writing a blog is timeconsuming and annoying. Then twitter comes along - I can tell everyone what I'm doing, but it takes me 1 second + it's WAY more targeted than a blog. AND I can chose how in depth I want to go, if VERY then i point a tweet to my blog, if not I just leave it as that.

That is why Twitter works, inside my pea brain at least.

    Hi everyone

I've just signed up to Twitter and from what I can see, the only thing you can do on there is update your 'status'.

So my question is, how do you promote your business on Twitter?
Do you simply put your website URL as your status update?

Most thing happening like Twitter is kinda trend.

Whether or not it will last depends on liking. Up till now, everyone seems to enjoy typing away with 140 characters... For IM, some benefit with increase sales. Some use it to rattling about life. Others give info about their latest whereabouts. We have some releasing frustration, that's good as it is better in health to let go some steams!

Guess it will last at least a year or two.

Just catching up with this thread from yesterday.

Most of the responses reflect what I was thinking myself - that people simply like making their thoughts known (inane or not) particularly to people who have expressed an interest (real or not). Twitter offers a free, quick and easy way for them to do it.

    Clever.

More like forums than blogs, instant messaging or SMS, actually.

    Interesting. Very interesting.

Twitter is something like Facebook or MySpace.

It's something the masses use for fun.

It's not something that marketers would use as a core strategy. Perhaps as a supplemental strategy, but not a core strategy. Unless, of course, you are selling some book on Twitter on Amazon.

That's what many fail to realize after having the blinders pulled over by 'make money from Twitter' marketers.

There are many reasons why twitter is so popular.

Among them i personally believe that we like it because it inflates our heads just that little bit more, because what I have to say is sooo important! Its a typical human ego thing.

Why do people dress different, drive big loud cars, turn their iPods up on the train or send postcards when on that fabulous holiday?

      For 2 reasons.

Reason #1) Humans get pleasure from blowing smoke up their own arses (Thanks Gordon Ramsey for that delightful piece of english vocabulary)

Reason #2) we like to share stories & information. Its coded into our fat meaty brains. We MUST share this or that piece of info. Not only this but in today's society with the huge influx of info we just don't have the time or the need to read thousand word essay's . People just want you to spit that story or information out!
