So, my boss has tasked me with going out and finding sites in our niche (wristwatches), and propose a banner ad exchange.

Of course, I'm open to any and all ideas, but the only issue is that I feel like the sites that are comparable in traffic to ours (nearly 2K uniques/day) wouldn't be interested in doing an exchange.

Am I wrong in thinking this way? I don't want to spend a tonne of time chasing after a ghost...I'd rather use that time more efficiently.

Does anyone here have any other suggestions?

    Hi,

Does your boss actually know anyting about internet marketing or is it just some buzzword he is getting off on.

Sounds like neither of you have had time to sit down and scope this out properly

LOL I'm afraid that he doesn't, actually (I know that Matthew is banned, but I'm responding to the others that are reading it).

Like I said, I'm not on board with it, but he is...

I don't know that your competition would necessarily want to post their competitors' ads on their site.

The only reason someone would make a site about wristwatches is to sell wristwatches.

I don't know what services you already offer - but I'd think a social community...Q/A type thing might perform better. Show people that you guys are present. If they're having an issue with their watch, tell them how to fix it. Give video tutorials on re-sizing their watch. Whatever (I don't know much about watches...I've had a $12 timex on my wrist for the last 6 years).

I think being present EVERYWHERE (facebook, G+, Twitter, Pinterest, etc) and being genuinely concerned for potential clients will perform better than banner ads - if they're even accepted.

It wouldn't necessarily be on other watch forums per se, although many of our members are also members of other watch forums (one of our members has a watch forum, and we're going to be doing some cross-promoting)...it'll be more for watch blogs, jewellers/watch stores, things of that nature.

I can see what you're saying though...and yes, we have quite a presence on FB, twitter, blogger, tumblr, Pinterest, etc.

What you need to do is to sit down and work out who your typical customer is. Are they male or female? Are they local? What age group are they in? What income bracket are they in? Until you know your typical customer it's very hard to begin to target them.

Once you are armed with that information you can now go out and find websites where you target market already hangs out. That is where you can buy banner space.

I very much doubt your competition is going to want to swap banner ad space with you and I'm a bit confused why your boss wants to put his competitions banners on his site as well. At worst if you were to find competition who were silly enough to allow this, you should just buy the banner space rather than swapping it. You don't want their banners on your site.

It's alright to do banner swaps on sites that sell products that are complimentary to yours but not products that compete directly with yours.
