I want to learn the right way

There are a billion "How To" books out there for online marketing, but most are flash in the pan techniques that are usually some form of exploitation of existing loopholes. Once Google or some other system catches wind of it, the system changes and you have to start over.

What I need is a comprehensive, realistic look at time tested techniques that won't go away in a month. I'm not looking to make a million dollars in a month, but I am looking for growth potential that I can build on over months and years.

I am also interested in possibly having a mentor, so if you have any sources for that, it would be appreciated.

You need to view Internet Marketing as a sales career.

It's not something magical and fancy because it's online - it's still sales through and through.

Learn how to sell and the rest will follow.

Watch videos on YouTube concerning entrepreneurship and sales.

    Read books on selling.

I highly recommend Grant Cardone - Amazon.com: Grant Cardone: Books, Biography, Blog, Audiobooks, Kindle (non affiliate)

    It's a sales job...know that...accept that.

Everything else are just little tools.

You actually have to learn more than you realize. If you are serious about internet marketing, I strongly recommend that you learn web development first. Then learn about usability, creating interfaces, color theory and so on. Then focus on marketing. There is a LOT to learn, but if you don't take the time you will be like everyone else who's looking for quick and easy money.

Well, you do need to focus on one thing and stick with it. There isn't any one right thing to do... many different things work. It would depend on what interests you. If you stay interested in something, it is much easier to stick with it.

Avoid chasing all the shiny objects that you find. In the past, I have had a horrible time with jumping from one thing to another. Never letting things progress far enough with one thing. The grass ALWAYS looks greener on the other side of the fence, but trust me... that is an illusion.

Find one thing that really interests you and go for it. It could be tons of different things. Once you find a subject that you can stick with... you will start building a list. Having a list is the best thing you can possibly do.

How do you get a list?

Put up a squeeze page and offer something for free. You've probably heard that a lot. Do it. It works.

Don't offer some piece of crap that no one wants. Think about the things that interest you about the subject or questions you have about the subject and use that. Create something valuable to give away. Valuable doesn't mean it has to be a 220 page ebook. It can be just a few pages, but the content needs to be good.

Toss up a squeeze page and send it some traffic.

    Where do you get traffic?

Traffic can come from PPC, Solo Ads, Fiverr, Social Media... wherever. The more targeted you can get, the better. I wouldn't suggest jumping into PPC. Try the less expensive or free ways. Be creative. Solo Ads work better than you might think... it may still cost you to run the ad, but it will be a set price and not open ended like PPC. Plus, if someone is already on someone's list for the subject that you are interested in... they have a good chance of joining your list. How many lists are you on for subjects that you like? I would guess most people are on several lists in subjects they are interested in.

Once they are on your list you can hit them with affiliate offers. You can put an affiliate offer in your free gift as well. Now... I say hit them with offers, but that doesn't mean you pitch them every chance you get. You can "suggest" affiliate offers that have helped you out in the past and you are passing that along to your list.

In a nutshell... that is how you start.

From there, you can do lots of things. Create your own products, JV deals with other people in the same niche. Be creative.

Just make sure you are always giving more value than what the customer pays you.

If they are paying you $27, give them $277 in value. If you always give more than what they are paying... you are going to do fine and have loyal customers.

Great! I have a design background and have designed for web in the past. I'm not on the programming side so much, but I am working on fixing that by studying HTML CSS and Java. I'll definitely focus on the squeeze pages too. In fact, I am going to attend a class on making pages that convert next week, so that'll come in handy.
