Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that provide communication security over the Internet

“Why do I need SSL? What will it do for me?” This is an important question for anyone involved in the web to understand. SSL is the backbone of our secure Internet and it protects your sensitive information as it travels across the world. It keeps the Internet from being ruled by anarchists and criminals and provides many direct benefits to you and your customers.

The primary reason why SSL is used is to keep sensitive information sent across the Internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can understand it. This is important because the information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to the destination server. Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to.

This protects it from hackers and identity thieves.

So would you recommend it for just a normal blog which does not have a members sign up or anything?

If its just a simple blog, you don't need SSL by any mean.

Unless you are having a site/blog which accepts payments and user data, you don't need SSL.

if you don't need it, why bother?
if you never generated/installed an SSL cert before, re-read previous answer.

Installing certs requires you have access to your web-server config folder
which means you need su privileges. If you don't know what that is
('su' stands for superuser), then you probably don't have su access
      to your server box.
Also, depending on your computer proficiency, installing certs "for 1st time"
usually means a mild or a heavy headache. If you hit a road-bump, I suggest
Google is your best tool to debug and solve your problem, as most hit
the same road-bumps ... simply paste the error message you got into google
and see what comes up ...
      Good luck

I personally don't think that you need one for what you described,
but that's your call. Also, look at the difference between shared
    certificates and dedicated SSL certificates.

Many hosting packages come with free shared SSL, and some even
come with a free dedicated SSL certificate.

Also, look at who can't access your site if you are using an SSL
    certificate.

Unless you are accepting payments or private information, an SSL cert is unnecessary.

SSL certificates is must if you are building a shopping cart, as it encrypts all information passing to and from your website. This includes sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, email addresses, personal information, and even credit card numbers! This is one reason an SSL Certificates is required in order to to accept credit card payments on a website.

But if it only a blog it is not mandatory, you may and may not use it, its up to you.
