Is Google Screwing Us Over Yet Again?

Hey folks

I just opened a new gmail account to subscribe to good ol' David Deangelo's Double Your Dating newsletter (for training in email copy, of course, erherrm).

Much to my befuddlement, after signing up 3 or 4 times using various different proxies, cleaning out my cookies, etc, David D's emails just wouldn't turn up in my inbox....

Until I realized that Gmail now comes as default, with 3 different inbox tabs. One for 'Personal' emails, one for 'Social' emails (facebook, google plus etc), and another for 'Promotions'.

David D's emails are no-where to be seen in your inbox, until you click the 'Promotions' tab.

I'm pretty sure that all mass emails are now going to be thrown into the 'Promotions' tab, which no-one will bother to open, UNLESS they are actually looking forward to receiving your emails... which they should be doing anyhow I suppose.

    I fail to see why that constitutes Google screwing us over. They're simply changing the UI again, and the tabs are very obvious, so it's hard to understand why you'd miss them. I'm not a fan of the new tabs but there is a way to revert to the old way.

    GMail supports a bulk-mailer extension for mail sending. It makes it easy to identify bulk email and for people to unsubscribe.

    If you don't like Google, you don't have to use them. It is all voluntary, and they can run their own business any way they want to.

    I don't like a lot of what they do, but they obviously do a very good job of it as they are number one in most of what they do. but you still don't have to use them.

      It's true.

      Deep in an undisclosed room in the Googleplex, Google has assembled a collection of the most brilliant and evil minds they could assemble, with the sole objective of screwing over Internet marketers, especially us little guys sending a few hundred or a few thousand emails at a time.

      Email Tabs!

      What caught my attention over and beyond "Is Google Screwing Us Over" was the " Yet Again" part.

      I haven't been screwed over by Google ever, let alone again. Google doesn't hurt, but helps you if you don't try to game them. And seriously, breaking up your received mail into categories complete with tabs is really about organization, not "screwing over", isn't it.

    How is Google making a change to gmail screwing people over. I personally don't like the tabs, so I went into the gmail configuration and unchecked them all but the primary one so my mail comes in as it always has. Simple.

    I didn't care for a lot of things about the way that Google processes
    email until, I took the time to go through some tutorial, and learned
    to properly configure my inbox.

    Now, I get all of the email that I want, much of it never hits my inbox,
    but is filed where I'm aware of it, and often flagged.

    I also probably only spend about 10... maybe 15% as much time
    on email as I use to, and I've become a Gmail ninja. Heck, I've even
    learned how to recall an email up to 30 seconds after I've sent it...
    handy for when you forget an attachment, or change your mind
    about telling someone off

    I may even go back and read the manual on how to use more
    software and apps!

    By the way, there are things that you can put in your emails... or
    leave out, that keeps it from being automatically filtered out of your
    intended recipient's Gmail inbox. A short report on this might make a
    good WSO

      There is a point to this.

      Of course it's a free service and people don't have to use it.

      But the average gmail user may not take the time to learn about tabs and may miss your email that they've been getting and reading in the past. If it ends up in the promotions tab they may miss it. So yes it could end up hurting internet marketers and potentially everyone who markets through email even to their own list.

            I would debate the word "average" and have to go with less than average.

            I also can't help but wonder this. If a person doesn't have the intelligence to understand how tabs work, are they really going to be intelligent enough to even recognize a good offer?

            And what about if they do purchase something from you but can't figure out how to use it? It seems to me they would ask for a refund. A high refund rate isn't good and is down right frustrating. Perhaps if a person can't figure out how to use tabs, they aren't the best to have on your list.

            If you are concerned about it... Why not add some wording to your thank you page?

            Hey GMAIL users! Gmail just made some cool improvements to their user interface. See the Promotions tab up top? Well, click on it to find the email I just sent ya! Peace!

                WOW, out of ALL these emails, here's the ONE person who knows what I'm talking about.

                I don't give a rat's ass about Google's intentions. Of course they don't go out there to intentionally screw over internet marketers, their intention here is obviously to improve the user experience.

                But Google's little change here WILL screw us over, regardless of whether or not it is their intention.

                And all these STUPID remarks about "well if you don't like Google, don't use 'em"... shit, it aint that I'm using Google, it's that my customers and subscribers are! What am I gona do? Refuse to send email to anyone that uses gmail? How bleedin' stupid would I be to do THAT?

                Damn, of course I as an internet marketer can change the tab settings, it's the recipient I'm worried about. Most people (i.e. non-IMers) who use email don't bother to change any settings.

                Previously, whenever a customer/subscriber would receive an email from you, they'd see your email whenever they signed into their gmail account.

                Now, they'll only see your email if they sign into their gmail account, AND click the 'Promotions' tab --> THAT'S an extra step right there, and it WILL have an affect on your bottom line!

                The vast majority of people will NOT turn the tabs off!

    Google isn't screwing anyone over. They are simply running their business as they see fit. It is no different than hotels, restuarants, etc. If we don't like their products and/or services we simply don't have to buy or use. Have you tried other email providers such as yahoo, Hotmail, or your own domain email?

    Mike Geary's (truthaboutabs.com) emails used to land in the promotions tab, now they are landing in the main tab. The type of content sent in the emails hasn't changed. Of course, he uses a self hosted autoresponder.

    Aweber seems to get filtered out automatically.

    P.S.

    If a message from the promotions tab is dragged to the main tab, further emails from that person will go to the main tab. You can encourage people to do that, but it will require supreme content.
