I've Just Resigned From My Job
 

So I've been a bit of a lurker on these forums for a couple of years but thought I would start to get more involved now... reason why?

I've just quit my well-paid job.

I've been doing IM for 3 years part-time now, picking up tips, tricks, advise from this forum and various other websites, blogs, and mentors... and have consistently been making more money online outside of work, than I have with my full-time job for the last 12 months.

Why did it take me so long to quit - well I am not usually a risk-taker but thought it's now my time to be free. I can see what works online for me, so my quitting my full-time job I can rinse and repeat those methods and make my own way in life.

Plan is to work 3 days a week, and then spend rest of the week with my wife and 5 month old son.

Looking forward to having more discussions on here over the next few months :)

Congratulations to you. Leaving the ordinary workforce is a real accomplishment.

May I make one suggestion ...

While that plan is commendable, I would suggest that you might want to work a little harder while you're still young and enthusiastic. Your plan sounds like semi-retirement to me.

With a brand new daily routine and a babe in arms, I would think it best to continue to work full time (at least 40 hrs/week) in your new career and build your business up. Save your money for the future. What are you going to do with 4 days a week left open?

I guess I'm saying that you are in a very enviable position with extra time on your hands. Why not secure your financial future by continuing to work hard while you're young? There is plenty of time ahead for the Internet lifestyle. You can still work a good 5 days a week and have plenty of time to be with family. Your Internet business could be here today and gone tomorrow. You know the saying "make hay while the sun shines."

Just a few reflections from someone who sees a lot more miles in the rear view mirror than in the windshield ...

I am also not a high risk taker.
Decided to earn money for 3/4 days per week and enjoy life for rest of the time. 6 month ago I decided to quit my job.
Looking for a sustainable earning.

Any tips for me ?

Putting your balls on the line can be one of the best things you do OR one of the worst things you do. I did the same thing and quit my job a few years ago and it forced me to take actions I had not taken for many years, just because the need had never been there.

Use it to your advantage and push forward. I would be working a lot harder than 3 days a week in the beginning though. This is the make it or break time so you don't want to slacken off just yet.

I hear what some of you guys are saying about working more than 3 days a week... but the whole point of me now being able to quit my job is that I have the freedom to be in control of my own destiny.

Someone said "sounds like a retirement"... well yep, mini-retirements high on the agenda (read Tim Ferriss) - I'd rather have quality time now rather than wait until I am 60.

From a financial planning perspective, it was very smart of you to have at least 12 months of consistent income before quitting your job. Most people that I deal with tend to quit their jobs prematurely.

It's not just about the income you make, it's also about making sure you have adequate life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, home owner's insurance, fire insurance, etc. (if you own your home).

Aside from having the proper protection, you should also earn enough money to set aside for retirement.

The first thing people should do is have an emergency fund, and there are different philosophies regarding this, but I used to tell my clients that having 12 to 18 months of expenses saved up is a must have in case of emergencies.

Lastly, and people don't like to talk about this, you should have a plan in place in case you become disabled or if you should die. This is where estate planning comes into play. People don't like to think about the worse case scenarios but it's something everyone should plan for, business owner or not.

I commend you on your plan to work 3 days a week and spend time with your family. Your 5 month old is very young and the first several years are very formuative and it's very important to spend time with them. Those are years you will never get back. Sounds to me like you will do very well.

My IM career started after I was sacked from a job I valued and thought the company valued me. It was the wake up call I needed because I realized I was just a number, a disposable liability.

After I "made it", I sent my old boss some flowers and thanked her for changing my life!

I don't have to work for anyone else now.

Thanks RoD, what I have done whilst working at my full time job is save off enough money to last a year - just in case all my websites and income suddenly die tomorrow - just so I have that security and buffer in case things go wrong - if people can do that, then highly recommend it.

Excellent. Another thing that I advised small business owners to do is to document their processes and procedures. And have it done in a way where someone could read through them and keep your business afloat in case something happens to you.

People don't like to talk about it and people put it off, but it's something people should do as soon as their business shows some stability.

That's a great piece of advise. If I got hit by a bus tomorrow my wife would not have a clue what is going on. Such is the life on an IM that there are multiple accounts, bank accounts, hosting, subscriptions, email addresses - it's a complete spider's web - most of which is in my own head.

Having no steady income was scary as hell for me. I didn't sleep for days.

Good for you, and good luck - I remember that day well, now twelve years ago, a one year old at home, another on the way, and a nice mortgage to pay! But as someone once said, leap and the net will appear. Twelve years later, and now four kids, it somehow worked out ... as it will for you.

Max,

I think what I am suggesting about continuing to work hard while you're young comes from seeing the ups and downs of personal economic challenges, health issues and expenses (which always seem to hit later in life), and the lack of saving for retirement that is so widespread in society.

Your life is yours right now and you can choose to kick back if you want. But there may come a time when, for whatever reason, your Internet self employment may not cover your needs.

Internet businesses collapse for some folks almost without warning.

What I and others are saying is that you have the opportunity, right now, to build up your reserves, grow your business, and put something away for tougher days ahead.

You can still enjoy a wonderful life, have lots of time with your family, and work your business at the same time. It's much easier to be employable, or build a business, or start from scratch when you're young. You don't want to be in the position where you have to do those things when you're 60.

OK so here's my story, I doubt it will unlock any secrets but perhaps could inspire or generate some comments. As a disclaimer, worked for a number of years as a web designer so think that gave me a good head start in IM.

A few years ago I went through a messy divorce which left me in quite a bit of debt. Whilst I had a job for a very well known global technology company it still wasn’t enough to get these debts paid off… so decided to look at ways to make money online.

My first project was an exercise bike review website. I made a few mistakes… firstly I targeted the UK market. Should have targeted the US market due to the higher traffic numbers – however, it taught me how to use Wordpress, set up hosting, and also join affiliate networks that were selling these products.
My second mistake on that project was to use real spammy linking networks – do you remember Build My Rank? Well I used that for link building, Google came a knocking and I went from making £250 a month to £50.

But, I could now see that it was possible to make money online.

What I decided to do was look at the tech products I knew about from my 9 to 5 job… and then used networks such as Commission Junction to find relevant offers. Because I knew the products it let me really create compelling and targeted content – but this time I was hitting the US market.
I was earning perhaps $2000 dollars a month via IM in 2011, but in 2012 things kind of went nuclear overnight and since then have been on a ever increasing income stream.

Fast forward to 2013 and I have around 14 websites. Some are related to things like coupon codes, some are review sites, some are 1 pagers, some health niche, generally a broad spectrum of stuff – what I do sometimes is find a website that works, and then create a new version of it so I can start to dominate the SERPS.

My monthly revenues are now in the $20,000 dollar a month bracket. I’ve managed to pay my debts, buy a great new car, and have a very privileged life where I don’t need to worry too much about bills.

However, I know nothing in life is guaranteed and so have only decided to quit my job this month after saving most of my affiliate income over the last year to give me a security fall back in case Google comes knocking again.

Now I am going solo I will be looking to expand on my portfolio of sites, go into different niches, and also look to put something back into the Warrior Forum in terms of how I do affiliate marketing using networks such as Commission Junction – these guys are my biggest payers. Once I get some time I will post up some detailed tips and guides on how I run my IM business which I hope will help some of you on here.

trust me since then I never looked back. I am just chilling and enjoying.

I congratulate you on your common sense. You waited until you had savings in place and until you felt you could rely on your online income.

Congratulations on the big achievement!

I think one big key thing to take away from this that many newcomers in this industry can learn from is it took you years before you were making good money to quit your job.

You DID NOT find a shiny push button, or some software that generate all the income for you.

You put in lots of work learning from your trials and errors of what worked, and what did not -- then spent all your time into creating your websites to the point that are now.

One piece of advice I would give to you is to start diversifying more online. It sounds like you have a lot of your eggs in the Google / SEO basket. Which of course is very risky, from a "financial security" perspective. Things can change fast online, and often with little or no warning.

If I were you, I would start learning about and experimenting with other types of traffic and income generation strategies (PPC, list-building, video marketing, media buys, product creation, etc). You want to get to the point to where if 1 particular type of traffic source or income generation method dries up, you won't lose any sleep at night, because you will have others to fall back on.

Good luck moving forward! I haven't had a "regular" job in about 5 years now... it's a great feeling. :)

Quick question as well why would you buy an ebook back in February on how to make money online if your anywhere close to this level of 20k per month in revenue ?

With all due respect to you I don't feel the need to prove my earnings. If I was after some kudos or back-slapping I would probably use my real name and would be far more actively involved in the forum.

The whole point of online revenue for me is continual improvement and continued earnings.

By your comment it would appear that once you hit a certain level of income it means you can no longer learn from other people?

I don't fit into that mindset and am actually just about to sign-up for another course on Internet Marketing this week because I want to keep finding new ways to diversify my income and keep pushing... especially that I have now quit my job.

I bought a 10 dollar book on link-building last week... why? Because I don't know everything.

Quite why I would need to lie is beyond me. Perhaps if I was trying to sell something to you that might be to my advantage - but I'm not.

It's obviously not a very well informed judgement he has of you, but that's his right I guess. I'm not sure how 20K earners are "supposed" to come across either.

Unfortunately for him, he's the one who has to deal with his mindset. In the meantime, congratulations on your success and being an inspiration to (most of) us all.
