What does Reputation Management REALLY Entail?

I have hired a few people form Odesk to do some Reputation Management (RM) for my on;one retail store . But it seems most people you get form there are just SEO or backlinking types. Whereas, the more I read about RM the more I see it is NOT about SEO or backlinking, but more startegically using high ranked sites (maybe like Hubpages) to consistently post updates that cannot be externally affected .

What sites are best to use for creating strong web properties that can overcome high ranked review sites like Pissedconsumer.com and ripoffreports.com that are IL-Legitimate review sites primarily used by malicious competitors to post anonymous slander?

Reputation management is more about managing the reviews and responses to them from the business owners. You will find a lot of "bottom feeders" out there that are trying to SPAM the review sites with fake positive reviews in order to push the negatives ones out. This will catch up with them as the other companies are getting wise to the fact that someone in a third-world country just commented on how good of a job their plumber just did in Maine.

The way that I handle reputation management for my clients is through good citation management and making them aware of any negative reviews or comments being made. In most cases, the business owner either using me by proxy or doing it themselves, can respond to the reviews and offer good customer service. For example, I have one client that owns a Chinese Restaurant and generally has good reviews about his business. Recently he had an unhappy customer flame poor service in their comments and the review appeared in Google Places when it came in from Urban Spoon. I made the owner aware of it and he provided me with a positive comment to the negative one, offering a complimentary meal on their next visit. As a result, the customer responded back in the comment thread with a resounding thank you and that they would give them another shot at business.

Using tools to help you comb through the citations and reputation of the client is also critical once you reach a point where you are juggling multiple ones. I personally use BrightLocal.com for this and I am able to Whitelabel the service as my own when the reports are automatically sent to my client each month.

The backlinking and building of strong SEO presence really plays a small part in reputation management in my opinion. Also, quite a few of the bogus review sites are starting to get a bad reputation of their own and the consumers are getting wise to it.

I hope this helps in some way

It's not that easy to get rid of rippoffreport comments.

In theory it is very simple:

Publish an abundance of positive articles on certain web properties to push the bad stuff down beyond page 1 and then beyond Google page 2 and then beyond page 3.

After it has fallen off page 3 nobody would really see it and it would get less and less visitors and then fall off further down.

The trick is to select the proper web properties to use AND to work WITH Google not against Google.

If you just hire random service providers you might accidentally give the bad stuff an SEO boost.

By using wrong methods the clean-up action can back fire.
