Email lists vs. Data.com

I run a business and am interested in expanding my email marketing efforts. We target vp and c-level marketing executives from particular industry verticals on our email campaigns. In the past our email lists have included information similar to what you would find on a site like data.com or hoovers; name, email address, job title, company name, company vertical (SIC classification).

My question is this: Is it possible to acquire email lists that have this level of specificity on sites like warrior forum? If so, how would you grade the accuracy of these lists compared to those that come from professional services like data.com or hoovers?

Very curious to hear your thoughts on this. If you can point me in any particular direction please do.

Thanks!

The purchase of email lists is generally frowned upon in professional marketing circles. Especially here at the WF. Why?

You will be contacting people that have not given their permission to be marketed to. Unsolicited commercial email - you know - the stuff you hate to get in your inbox? SPAM

There are lots and lots of email lists for purchase online, but if you care at all about your business, you will steer clear of them.

Thanks for the advice, Steve. I care a great deal about my business. The reason I ask the question is that we've had great success emailing people from sites like data.com. So, I was curious if "email lists" found elsewhere were as good. In particular, if someone who has experience with both can draw a comparison.

      Thanks,

I'm sorry dragon, I don't have any experience with these sources.

The question that I would pose, however, is about the responsiveness of such lists. Typically, when a company collects an email address it is in response to an offer of some kind. The prospect opts in to get a product, a service, or something of specific value.

In generic lists, what was the motivation of the prospect to give up his email address? You don't really know.

It seems to me, you would be purchasing a bunch of names that were not really targeted and therefore of very suspect value.

        Good luck to you,

        Steve

Yeah it is best to build your own list. Having repeat business from your list is obviously the goal. Otherwise, in order to make sales you need to continually send out new emails to new lists. When you build the relationships with the people on your list, they will buy from you over and over again. Plus you can help your list by sending them information like free reports, free videos, tips and tricks for your niche. That enables them to help you build your list through referrals as well.
