This is More Effective than a 100 $2,000 coaching programs combined

When I first got started online, I didn't have much money. So I couldn't really buy any decent training programs.

So I had to rely on modeling.

I was actually able to make $3,000 my very first 30 days online, by just watching the top people online.

I found all of the best people. The sites with the highest alexa rankings, the "gurus" everyone kept talking about.

I setup an email folder called "model"

I subscribed to all their lists, and quickly realized that I needed a page I could use to collect names and emails with.

Every single person had one. So I figured I should get one too.

I checked all my emails to see who they were using, at the time the majority of people were using getresponse. ( I now use aWeber)

At the time getresponse had a free up to 200 subscribers option, so I went with that.

Everyday, I would wake up and check my "model folder"

I saw that, they were emailing every day, so I figured "hey I should email everyday"

I also saw they were just sharing stories and what they learned that day, so that's what I did.

I just began to share what I was learning as I modeled closely only the most successful people I could find.

"keep in mind" I didn't understand why I was doing what I was doing. I didn't realize that until much later.

Just like karate kid "wax on" Wax of"

It didn't matter. I was starting to get results.

After Google searching them and attending all their free trainings, I was able to figure out how to get free traffic to my site. It wasn't long before I hit my 200 sub limit and had to pay.

I was thrilled because I could actually afford it.

I was getting traffic and making sales, and keeping an eye on what they were doing.

Then I thought, "well they are all jumping in front of camera and doing live trainings"

So I started jumping in front of camera and doing live trainings. (this was tough, but I overcame my fear and did it anyway)

My income was steadily climbing, I still didn't fully understand why.

But I didn't care.

Everyday I would check my "model folder" and ask myself, how can I apply that in my business.

then I would come up with my own unique way to apply the same strategy in my own unique way.

This is a strategy I still use today, I do buy training programs, but I still have a folder called model that I check every single day.

I gain more valuable insight by actually watching what they do, instead of listening to what they say.

Everyone I model does at least 1 million per year, there are even people I model in my industry that make hundreds of millions of dollars.

I encourage you to subscribe to all the top leaders in your niche, and check that folder everyday.

Be very selective who you model. And always remember modeling is not copying.

ask yourself "how can I use that in my business in my own unique way"

You'll be surprised at what your own creativity and imagination can do for you.

I hope you get as much value from this as I have over the years

I like that, totally agree. There is far too much dis-information in the IM game, you'd think we were in the espionage industry.

This really is a great post. Learn by what people are doing -- more then what they are saying.

I read the fastest way to succeed is to follow a method that has been proven and tested to work and simply copy it.

Congratulations on you're success and wish you the best of luck in the future

Pretty cool post man. That really is the secret sauce is to just do what actually works. Yeah in programs they'll tell you, but there's usually other information that isn't immediately applicable to getting a result right now. It can be distracting. But just modelling the already successful is a great way to get results.

I notice a problem with modelling though is the fear for example your fear of getting in front of the camera you conquered. I'm not big on that either but I can get in front of a camera to do a squeeze page or whatever so I do it. Blogging is a different story I just tear it down after like 24 hours.

The other big problem is comparing yourself to what you see, which is a really dumb thing to do. It's a normal human tendency to compare and contrast, but it's just logical that someone who has been doing something for years and years will be ahead of you. But sometimes we let that fact discourage us when we shouldn't.

    Thanks for the share.

  • This is a fantastic post and a great learning philosophy.

However (not to put you on the spot too much here), I'm a bit curious what you were offering in your free training and in your videos if you were so new. Was it a case of "fake it till you make it" or were you targeting niches outside of the money-making arena? Or did you just pass on the things you were learning to those a step behind you in the process?

I agree this is a great approach either way, but I'd like to throw out a word of caution to newbies who read this and take modeling as an excuse to pretend they're something they're not.

    Once again, great post.

Yeh, researching the competition is valuable and noticing what works best for them. That's good you realized it right away. When I first started watching the 'gurus' and all that stuff I felt like they were too much out of my league and had all this knowledge and connections and built up assests and customers etc. I did not feel as if I had things to offer others as they did and felt on the outside of this inner circle they were in. Now it all seems much more demystified!

That was a sticking point for me though. They all said, Brand Yourself, Get on Camera etc. Though I don't WANT to!

Nice post. Modeling definitely works. Probably need to do more of it myself – but as was pointed out, modeling is not copying. You have to put your own spin on stuff to make it work.

The reason I CONTINUE to hire coaches is for the connections and networking opportunities that they bring.

Some of my strongest affiliates are former coaches.

Now, you can certainly contact these same people and become friends with them etc, etc, but you can also speed that process up by simply hiring them as your coach, and using the coaching sessions as relationship building opportunities.

I am always on the lookout for coaching offerings from people that I want to connect with.
That's an interesting insight and way to look at their potential value. If they are actually one on one training...

It is nice to see that you are doing what they are doing.

A lot of people just listen and read trainings but never do anything so you should be proud of yourself for taking action and succeeding at the same time.

    Way to go man.

Indeed. I'm on a few lists of 'gurus' and I mean proper gurus who have actually made millions online and can prove it because I like to see not what they tell me to do but what they are doing themselves.

Time and time again I see them saying to do something but not implementing it themselves.

I copy what they do and not what they say.

You probably saved yourself a few years of learning just by modeling the top gurus. The fact is that they have already spent a ton of money and effort coming up with their own techniques, which is why what you're doing works. The trick is to make it better and unique to your business.

Yeah, what you say definitely works. I mean, I don't do it consciously, but there are times when I remember seeing something somewhere and it just clicks. I read sales pages, ads, even forum signatures and I model their format without me realizing it.

I guess I have to get into it more though. I'm gonna be busy spying on top webmasters in my niche for the next few days. Thanks for the great advice Nicholas.

For the high Alexa ranking sites you can put your keyword inside google and the higher the sites is ranking, there is a possibility that the higher the Alexa ranking is ... not always and also depends on the niche ... in the IM arena is quite the opposite .
And you can check this out with the plugin you install on your browser.

As for the "goo-roo's" you check forums inside your niche and check the posts or just plain ask. People are move then willing to help you out.
