Can I rank high without being on Google Places

I'm sure this question has been beaten to death but I'm trying to rank sites (mostly service contractors) and am not sure what to do with Google Places. I live in flyover country and there are numerous middle size markets (Think AA baseball teams) within about 3 hours of me.

The goal is to create the sites, get them to rank, and then lease or sell leads depending on the situation all over this region. Not a unique playbook. I know Google Places is important but is it the be all and end all? Can you rank high through other criteria (content keyword etc)?

The reason I ask is that I don't want to get virtual addresses all over other towns knowing Google's antennae are up and will spike the site before it gets off the ground. Most of my targets work from home anyway so it isn't really important.

Google places enhance your ranking in google. You can get ranking even without google places.

One of my clients just landed a $150,000 contract because of Google Places and the work we have done.... isn't really important? It is VERY important.

Yes, you can rank organically, but it is going to become more and more difficult for lead gen websites to rank for local search terms with the changes that google is making for local.

Right now, organically you can rank above the 7 pack if you know what you're doing, but don't count on that always being the case. Definitely wouldn't build your business around google, you're going to end up with a bunch of heartbreaking moments.

Best advice... go ahead and test it out. Experience beats theory any and every day.
